31reasons··on Poll: What is your #1 productivity killer?
Great! but please don't ask questions from Knuth's book when you interview someone for programming job. Please. :)
31reasons··on First-Person Hyper-lapse Videos
What about motion sickness. I can't imagine trying lapse videos in the Rift without puking in one minute.
31reasons··on First-Person Hyper-lapse Videos
Mind blowing results! Although the name Hyper-lapse doesn't really convey the goal, it should be named Smooth-Lapse, because thats what its doing. Too much hyper-x already.
31reasons··on War in the womb
I agree with your point about anthropomorphizing. When you draw stark boundaries between mother and fetus at a biological level the fetus could be termed as adversarial but from holistic point of view the fetus becomes man or a woman and carries human race forward (in time) and also becomes part of immediate family where they create wonderful memories with their parents.

>>Even with the help of modern medicine, pregnancy still kills about 800 women every day worldwide

Um..I am not sure about modern medicine part. Most of these women must be in developing countries where you hardly get "modern medicine" on a regular basis.

31reasons··on Kale, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts are all the same species
Selective pressure to modify the genome is the goal for altering organism's characteristics not unlike what happens naturally. So it is indirect gene editing. Now if the new organism is still the same species as you started with. I am not sure about that. There must be a test/definition for that. I think man descended from Ape and is homosapien.
31reasons··on Kale, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts are all the same species
Whatever you want to call it, they don't have exactly the same genome. Calling them the same species is like saying Dog is Wolf and Human is Ape.
31reasons··on How odd is a cluster of plane accidents?
Assumptions that can kill hundreds of people. Its illegal to point a laser pointer at an airplane worrying that it would blind pilots even though most planes are on autopilot. At the same time they don't consider to assume that Russian backed rebels would have missiles capable of shooting down planes.

I hope they stay away from Israel/Gaza airspace as well and not wait for another incident. Maybe airlines should publish their flight paths to the public so that we can make our own decision!

31reasons··on How odd is a cluster of plane accidents?
One thing that really surprised me is that how laid back the attitude was of commercial airliners about the Ukraine war zone. It was already in the news that they are shooting down the war planes. So basically they were betting on some Russian missile system that would identify war plane from commercial planes. I would cancel all flights from a region thats engaged in any form of airborne projectiles.
31reasons··on Ask HN: Do bootstrapped billion-dollar companies exist?
I think ESRI was also bootstrapped.
31reasons··on Ask HN: Little hacks that make your life easier?
Work from home if possible.

"This is why when someone suffocates another person they are dead within minutes. You have stopped the supply of oxygen, so the electrons can no longer flow"

Oh i see, that is what happens. That makes sense now. Didn't know New Scientist has CSI edition too.

31reasons··on This CEO is out for blood
This is getting more interesting.
31reasons··on Works With Nest
Google or Apple will eat Quirky for breakfast.
31reasons··on My startup failed, and this is what it feels like
Wow I am kind of jealous of getting an opportunity to fail so spectacularly. It is obviously very hard but Nikki is very young and decades ahead of her to try new ventures. I call this great learning experience a success if you haven't lost your arm or a leg and can still function as a normal human being. She is definitely a winner, its pretty obvious to me.
31reasons··on The Highest-Paid CEOs Are The Worst Performers, New Study Says
>>I actually lost an investment because the investor thought I should not pay myself at all while trying to build the business.

That is absurd, they don't deserve to be investors. You receive money in exchange for equity. The money is used to run the company and build value for the investors. Providing salary to everyone who is engaged in building value must be part of the equation. Otherwise if you think about it, in extreme case you will give away your entire company to build value for investors and you will get nothing in the end.

31reasons··on Netflix replies to Verizon cease and desist letter
>>What should the gyms do?

Be Honest. They can invent a new business model based on transparency. Imagine if price is not fixed but you are charged per use based on the traffic at the moment. It could be similar to what Uber does, price based on demand.

In terms of ISPs, I think there should be a micro transaction exchange where I can buy X minutes of data transfer. If Verizon is clogged I switch my router to connect with ATT etc. All networks should create a single broker device thats given to each consumer.

31reasons··on Netflix replies to Verizon cease and desist letter
Good point about U > T. It also happens in Gym business where they oversell their gym capacity betting that 80% of their customers will be too lazy to come exercise everyday. Now imagine if I sell a motivation pill that makes you go to gym everyday. It would be absurd if Gym companies send me a cease and desist letter because i am overburdening their facilities because everyone who takes my pill wants to use their gyms everyday.

I don't understand. Why would you make everything in-house especially for site like Ok-Cupid which is not exactly used to power rocket engines.

31reasons··on From Poverty to Prosperity: A conversation with Bill Gates [pdf]
"If we don't need people to work, why should the government bend over backwards and "get on their knees and beg businesses to keep employing humans over algorithms"?"

I respect Bill Gates' ideas but this one is totally wrong. His solution is neither practical nor logical. The same solution could have been presented 100 years ago when people were being laid off due to the industrial revolution. We would not have progressed this far if we had given people's employment priority over power and efficiency of machines. In many cases algorithms are simply better and faster over humans and they are just going to get even better and faster. They will not only get things done safely but also reduce human errors and reduce energy consumption.

31reasons··on From Poverty to Prosperity: A conversation with Bill Gates [pdf]
"The broad fetishization of work and the obsession that everyone has to work is really standing in the way of progress."

nailed it!

31reasons··on 3D for the real world
As a consumer I don't care how difficult it is for you to implement it. Its the harsh reality of the consumer market.
31reasons··on 3D for the real world
It doesn't look ready for consumers. The scans looks like lumps of clay. Shouldn't it look exactly like the spaces it scans ? Thats what scanners do. When I scan a document, it gives me pretty sharp copy. I wouldn't pay for scanner that give me very fuzzy copy of a document, at least i would not try to sell it until i perfect it.
