From issues: “Well the magnet file contains a 300GB checkpoint “

That’s why they are using a torrent I suppose.

2devnull··on Prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing in the general population
Are you overweight? If so, did you consider losing weight instead of cpap? I feel like some people use cpap to treat lifestyle (diet/exercise/sleep hygiene), but other than the study in question (and similar), it’s not well known by most doctors I’ve talked to.

“pretty sure the biggest problem with social media is the staggering number of people spreading disinformation and lies”

I’m 100% sure you are wrong about that.

2devnull··on Socioeconomic status and the relationship between the SAT and GPA (2009) [pdf]
“Some level of inequality just seems inherently unjustifiable.“

Define justifiable. I would agree with “unfair.” Life is not fair. Is life “justifiable” to you? In nature, there are predators and prey, is that “justifiable”?

I like to simplify my thinking too, but your view seems inherently suppose almost superhuman discernment, that you (or other humans individually or collectively) can judge what is justified on a case by case basis without any concrete principals or criteria, and without bias! Doesn’t seem simple to me at all! How to distinguish the bill gateses from the other guys is a problem as old as civilization. There is more law and tax code written on this than you can ever hope to capture in your thinking. Ignoring policy and centuries of human knowledge isn’t “simple” as much as it is ignorance.

2devnull··on Socioeconomic status and the relationship between the SAT and GPA (2009) [pdf]
You seem confused. If people are unequal then equality of outcome is impossible and not worth pursuing[1]. The only possible equality is equal opportunity which as you rightly point out isn’t really equal. But it’s the only possibility. Equality of outcome denies free will.

[1] edit to clarify, I mean “not worth pursuing” past the point of equilibrium. We can improve equality of outcome to a point but then will hit a plateau. Pretending that plateau doesn’t exist is one of humanities biggest problems. It’s a costly lie that doesn’t serve anyone but certain professional groups.

2devnull··on Tell Congress: Stop the TikTok Ban. Instead, Protect Our Data No Matter Who
To citizens. Citizens are important in America.
2devnull··on Tell Congress: Stop the TikTok Ban. Instead, Protect Our Data No Matter Who
Is TikTok available in China uncensored?

Maybe they’re smarter?

2devnull··on Devin: AI Software Engineer
But people read much less of what you type now.
2devnull··on Association between cannabis use and subjective cognitive decline
Strong likelihood of 4.

“The reason for cannabis use, but not frequency and method, is associated with SCD.”

The finding is clearly an artifact of the methodology. BRFSS is probably not the right way to study this.

2devnull··on House committee votes 50-0 to force TikTok to divest from Chinese owner
Nice to see congress doing their job. China kills many Americans via tainted products and general incompetence. For example the COVID pandemic was the CCP’s fault. Many products from CCP China are toxic, bad for the environment, literal spyware. People who want to foist more of that on American citizens are, thus may offend some people, literally traitors.
2devnull··on Amid explosive demand, America is running out of power
Already priced in. That’s the problem with Taleb. His insight is not actionable.
2devnull··on Ex-Google engineer charged with stealing trade secrets
“ use their "local police" forces stationed in most western countries to harass”

Totally under appreciated point. It’s not “over there” anymore, the CCP have a strong and growing presence in the Bay Area now. Penetration into the FBI will take longer than google or local law enforcement but it is inevitable.

2devnull··on Ex-Google engineer charged with stealing trade secrets
“showing that another employee had scanned Ding’s access badge at the Google building in the U.S. where he worked to make it look like Ding was there during times when he was actually in China”

Google can’t secure itself. That’s been true for years. It’s an enterprise held together by monopoly power, lobbying and low interest rates.

2devnull··on Republicans Kill Popular FCC Program That Made Broadband Affordable for the Poor
This is remarkably clear thinking and serious analysis. Thank you for the insightful scholarly contribution!
2devnull··on Republicans Kill Popular FCC Program That Made Broadband Affordable for the Poor
They should just allow PG&E to merge with Comcast. All these problems would be solved by the cpuc. Why don’t the political partisans want easy answers like that?
2devnull··on Facing reality about the EU is a core requirement for good management
I’m saying the notion that China doesn’t regulate is ridiculous. If it is true that America leads rather than produces, it is precisely because it has embraced regulation to protect workers and groundwater.
2devnull··on Facing reality about the EU is a core requirement for good management
China can regulate more effectively than the EU. They have actual concentration camps. Look at Jack Ma. The EU has cookie banners. That’s not regulation, it’s a speed bump. Consider that the US cannot manufacture things because our environmental and labor regulations are so strict as to make it impossible. The idea that America doesn’t have regulations is not accurate. We have regulated the regulation, so it appears less regulatory but it is not.
2devnull··on Proposed Bill Would Give Americans $5k to Shop American
It seems like an interesting idea if there’s a way to make it not impossibly expensive to run, or too prone to fraud or both. Often there are these great sounding ideas that are impossible to implement. Our best laid plans go awry. Like NAFTA, and granting China most favored nation trade access. Seemed like great ideas at the time. Juiced the stock market no doubt. But now two or three financial crises later, the taxpayer is going to be paying incentives to try and bring some of that lost manufacturing back. Will it work? Same people who told us with confidence they knew what they were doing before are saying the same things now. “Just trust us, we know what we’re doing.”

Perhaps these vacillations in core political beliefs (protectionism is bad under trump, suddenly good under Biden) should be taken as a sign of incompetence by observant educated voters.

2devnull··on Why a White House Plan to Fund Office-to-Housing Conversions Isn't Working
The risk was not “priced in” which is to say there were perverse incentives to develop offices that weren’t truly needed and a corporate culture that was shielded from the consequences of misallocating funds.
2devnull··on Why a White House Plan to Fund Office-to-Housing Conversions Isn't Working
Sad that people will focus on the details of this problem but not step back and ask what incentives and macroeconomic conditions created the problem in the first place. We’ll get solutions that are worse than doing nothing, rinse repeat.
2devnull··on Over 100k Infected Repos Found on GitHub
I’m not saying don’t scan code for vulnerabilities, I’m saying GitHub shouldn’t be the place that the scanning happens. A good place would be where the code is getting compiled /executed.
2devnull··on Over 100k Infected Repos Found on GitHub
Strong disagree. It’s not GitHub’s job to tell you what’s good or bad. Only the user of the code can do that because it’s context specific. “I can trust this code” is a fantasy that won’t happen. Don’t trust code, test it.
2devnull··on Ask HN: Why is HN so often down?
Used to happen whenever you criticized communist China so I assumed it wad an anti-naughty-posting feature. (Thankfully there’s been some relaxation on this, as evidenced by this post being visible.)
2devnull··on The Amazon forest has an almost 3x year-on-year increase in fires in February
That worked well in the Bay Area. Definitely a bastion of sane real estate markets.
2devnull··on The Amazon forest has an almost 3x year-on-year increase in fires in February
“In short, the main origin is the anthropic origin that we talk about, the origin is the man setting fire, whether in a pasture area, next door or directly in the forest to practice, to let it spread”

Compare that to here. Man made fires by people who think fire suppression is the folly of European settlers.

2devnull··on Punk is dead and so are we
Pretty much anything post Sex Pistols is a fashion show. I always sort of felt bad for those kids and the metal nerds. Those I was close to were clearly terrified of the freedom and responsibility of adulthood, and often had tenuous relationships with their fathers, as a rule! My advice: Don’t use music as a form of social identity. Music as music is better than music as fashion.
2devnull··on ChatGPT went berserk
Using gpt to code should feel like taking an inflatable doll out to dinner. Where is the shame, the stigma? Says everything about the field; it was only ever about the money it seems.
