I am Guillaume, a full-stack developer living in Luxembourg. I am currently working on Mockoon (https://mockoon.com), a desktop API mocking application. It's the quickest and easiest way to create local mock servers. No account or remote deployment is needed. And it's open-source!

He is also such a clown, with clownesque statements and witnesses. I particularily like this one (from the judgement):

"Dr Wright’s remaining witnesses of fact

Ms DeMorgan is Dr Wright’s youngest sister. She gave evidence that Dr Wright was interested in Japanese culture and sometimes used nicknames for himself. Her evidence was to the effect that, when she was 16, she and some of her school friends encountered in the local park someone dressed in black as a ninja with a Samurai sword, and this person turned out to be her brother, Craig Wright."

255kb··on Open-source alternative to Heroku, Vercel, and Netlify
I concur, my first commit was a big one, squashed to avoid showing my shitty history, after coding an MVP for 3 months. I initially had no intention to open-source, so I was caring at all about my commit history. I still had one or two questions like "is it even your code?".

255kb··on Working from home isn't going away, even if some CEOs wish it would
I absolutely don't get this office dogs thing. I like animals, but I don't particularily like dogs. They jump and drool all over you. How is "liking" dogs considered as universal or even a perk?
255kb··on Working from home isn't going away, even if some CEOs wish it would
I despise flex desk policies. Not being able to feel like it's "my" spot, that I can organize how I want, is giving me anxiety. Sharing dirty keyboards and mouses, and not finding back my chair adjustments also gives me anxiety!
255kb··on Web apps or Mobile apps for solopreneur?
Does it really matter? I would say finding a problem to solve is the first step. From there you can assess if your target users are more prone to use a desktop website, a web app, or a native mobile app. I guess that some industries will only rely on installed native apps and frown upon browser web apps, and vice versa. Also, if your solution save people time, they would probably take the extra step of downloading something if they have to. I work on a rather popular dev tool, and it's a desktop app. Nothing else would really make sense for what it does (maybe a web app, but it would be more limited in capabilities). But people are willing to download it because it's useful.

That being said, I think mobile apps come with different challenges regarding distribution, conversion, etc. Also, the learning curve is definitely steeper in my opinion. Learn the web techs (JS, HTML, CSS) and you will be able to build nearly anything you want, front-end (websites, web apps, hybrid mobile apps) and back-end.

255kb··on Estimating Software Projects: So you messed up. Now what? (2021)
Some things may be urgent but most deadlines are bogus and created by sales and managers promising something to someone. And everything revolves around that, creating a toxic blame culture. Looking at you Scrum!
255kb··on School lunch breaks in France can be two hours (2012)
That's probably a cultural thing. Being French, raised next to the German border, married to a Belgian, I must say that our tradition of cooking twice a day (even in the evening, when time is more limited) is quite French. I work in Luxembourg and most German and Belgian people I know will eat a "cooked" meal once a day, and eat bread with something for the other meal. It's very frequent to see them bring a "tartine" for lunch, or the opposite. My wife works in a German company where people could come all over from the headquarters in Austria and bring bread and ham for lunch. Meanwhile the French go eating in restaurants nearly every day even if they know they will cook something elaborated in the evening. My dad, 100% pure French, always needs to cook something, and finish the meal with some mandatory cheese.
255kb··on B.C. lawyer reprimanded for citing fake cases invented by ChatGPT
Every time I see a company/startup claiming to do an AI about X or Y, I wonder how they can be trusted at all. What about all the hallucinations, false positives, etc.? Aside from some sort of tool that classify cases, or extract key points from an agreement, and talk in probabilities rather than asserting things I don't see a use for these. And I don't know if we will be able to 100% trust these tools one day.

255kb··on I quit my job to work full time on my open source project
I can confirm that funding one's work on an open-source project through sponsoring is one hell of a ride. As you said, most people are not concerned by OSS funding, let alone companies that have a hard time justifying paying for something free...

However, OSS is not incompatible with some form of monetization, coming up with a plan to sell courses, custom services, or cloud options is probably a safer road.

255kb··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
I started working on an open-source API mocking tool six years ago. It's called Mockoon and has recently crossed 500k downloads.

Two years ago, I quit my job to focus nearly full-time on it. I'm still freelancing on the side, but it's slowly bringing more money through sponsoring and the SaaS platform I'm building (a bit less than 1000$/month). Hopefully, 2024 is the year I can stop freelancing and live the dream! Work on an open-source project I love while not feeling guilty about not bringing enough money home :D

Sick and tired. But this is working. It seems that many developers actually want to do/use/learn whatever their peers are. Just look at all the tweets and reddit posts starting with "What should I use...?" or "What is the best...?.

255kb··on W4 Games raises $15M to drive video game development with Godot Engine
Thank you for the precision. I guess the important part is how Godot is currently organized and remains independent.
255kb··on W4 Games raises $15M to drive video game development with Godot Engine
> It seems like 2 of the 4 founders are also members ins the Godot board of directors and if I recall W4 has a strong voice in the Godot development team.

I missed that. I'm glad if Godot remains independent. VC funded OSS projects do not have a track record of remaining open-source.

255kb··on W4 Games raises $15M to drive video game development with Godot Engine
I find the title rather confusing, as, after reading their FAQ (https://w4games.com/faq/) it is clear that they don't own Godot. They are building a traditional BaaS for gaming, specifically targeted at Godot developers (and they may contribute to Godot development, which doesn't make a real difference rearding ownership).
255kb··on W4 Games raises $15M to drive video game development with Godot Engine
Reading the FAQ it seems they are not affiliated with Godot, nor control any of it aspects. https://w4games.com/faq/ It seems they plan (https://w4games.com/products/) to make money by creating a BaaS/SaaS platform and selling tools to make the Godot games easier to port to consoles.

255kb··on Bank transfers as a payment method (2021)
We have the same here in Luxembourg (name is Payconiq). It starts being accepted a bit everywhere. We scan the QR code with our banking app and it sends the money instantly. Some providers (telcos, electricity, etc.) started putting QR code on their invoice. Very convenient. Otherwise we pay nearly everything by bank transfer.
255kb··on French Gov Wants to Inject Domain Blocking Lists Directly into Web Browsers

In GDPR times, nearly every website is collecting personal data illegally (no clear consent, GA, US data transfers, etc.). Good luck to them to enforce this.

255kb··on Building a Slack/Discord alternative with Tauri/Rust
I maintain an open-source app built with Electron. It serves tens of thousands of users every months and nobody complained in 5 years that it is being built with Electron. Not saying that Electron is perfect, and that it couldn't be a bit more performant, but as a solo maintainer (and entrepreneur) it helps me ship something that save people time. The burden of maintaining an application is already huge. Having to juggle with multiple environments would be a hassle and I definitely wouldn't do it.

That being said, if a "drop-in" alternative would be available I would probably try to switch at one point. But the alternative would have to be on par with the ecosystem (including packaging, binaries signing, etc.), the community, the ease of use... I don't think there is such a thing yet.

255kb··on GitHub Accelerator: our first cohort and what’s next
Thank you :)
255kb··on GitHub Accelerator: our first cohort and what’s next
It definitely depends on the maturity of the project and the country you live in.

I was selected to be part of this first cohort with Mockoon. I'm from Luxembourg, so 20k is surely not a life changing amount of money. However, I quit my job two years ago to focus full-time on it. I think that I can make a living (probably a mix of paid services and sponsoring) while keeping the app open-source. But it's a long hard road and I am freelancing on the side which gave me the right balance but not complete peace of mind, financially speaking. So, while it's not a life changing amount, it will buy me some precious time. I also feel really motivated by this awesome recognition (after 5 years of work on this project) and I am looking forward the 10 weeks of coaching. So, all in all, it's a bit of a life changing event for me :)

(Edited a bit for clarity)
