2510c39011c5··on A Hard MIT Class
As for the puzzle on the page, has anyone found out the pattern of the number sequence?

  [3, 6, 9, 21, 22, 47, 78, 89, 134, 225, 368]
2510c39011c5··on More Lenovo woes: security flaws, website clerical errors, maybe layoffs
I agree...

IBM thinkpad not just has better quality, but also many good design ideas that were later overridden by Lenovo -- such as the original keyboard layout, as well as that you don't have to take apart the whole bottom board to swap a hard drive...

2510c39011c5··on Women preferred 2:1 over men for STEM faculty positions
but a higher level of oxytocin in a mother's body is directly related to the survival chance of the mother's immediate offspring -- this is not a _casual_ relationship, correct?

--

EDIT 1: sorry if my comment makes you feel repugnant...my original intention is just to state what I think as fact per the issue in question...

EDIT 2: my mistake...the hormone related to care-giving behavior is oxytocin and not progesterone...but still, woman usually has higher level of oxytocin than man...

2510c39011c5··on Women preferred 2:1 over men for STEM faculty positions
I am not talking about suffrage, but in a usual scenario a woman has "higher level of progesterone" than man is a _fact_, isn't it?

--

EDIT: the hormone related to care-giving behavior is oxytocin and not progesterone

2510c39011c5··on Women preferred 2:1 over men for STEM faculty positions
I agree.

What's the point of fighting all the time for gender equality without knowing what it really means of "gender equality"?

I mean, "gender equality" (or any other type of equality) is not correct and just by itself, and might not be manifested only through equal numbers of both gender representations...Gender equality might have some asymmetric effects to many other facades of the society...But what are those effects and how they matter?

Sure, equality would be comforting to everyone's intuitive feeling, but we need to get this world work in a better way than those personal intuitive feeling alone in the end...

2510c39011c5··on Women preferred 2:1 over men for STEM faculty positions
I think the natural tendency for most women to care for other people is determined by their usually higher level of oxytocin than men...

EDIT: the hormone related to care-giving behavior is oxytocin and not progesterone

2510c39011c5··on Women preferred 2:1 over men for STEM faculty positions
as the question raised in another thread here at HN (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9372297), on this very same topic

"what are the real benefits and downsides (commercial and
noncommercial) for the hiring preference of female over male, for
microsoft and for the whole society?"
One of the reasons I could come up with is,

"the industry hiring process starts to favor women than men, is to add
more feminine elements in the product/service they sell, through
increasing the women ratio in their team, and hence to attract more
women consumers and also perhaps the feminine side of straight and gay
  men."
2510c39011c5··on Hiring experiments reveal 2:1 faculty preference for women on STEM tenure track

  >Aside from the obvious, the bias, and people's knowledge of the bias,
  >creates a perception that women are only there due to an unfair bias
  >in their favor. This is toxic, and it damages the cause of reducing
  >such biases, because it brings conversations back to gender equality
  >when they should be about individual merit.
Just to diverge a bit, "bias" itself is not always a bad ass...It has its own merits such as reducing the decision making cost (just consider all the Bayesian methods out there, they are all about how to "bias")...

And the process of un-biasing, is also the process of finding new properties or attributes to bias to (such as the "merits" you mentioned), with more accurate prediction power...

But back to the question of gender bias, I feel one of the reasons the industry hiring process starts to favor women than men, is to add more feminine elements in the product/service they sell, through increasing the women ratio in their team, and hence to attract more women consumers and also perhaps the feminine side of straight and gay men.

EDIT: I don't know why the gender bias in the recent tenure-tracked professorship awarding process in STEM...Is it because the academia would receive more government or corporate funding if they get more woman professors? Or perhaps they want to attract more women students to the department? Or simply they just want to show their political correctness?

2510c39011c5··on Cartier “Santos Droit” Wristwatch
I feel there are just too much distracting information for all those images on the page...But I guess this is the most interesting part of the whole page, as for an average "nerd" in the HN community:

"In 1904, the Brazilian pilot Alberto Santos-Dumont complained to his
friend Louis Cartier that while he was flying with both hands on the
controls, it was impossible to read the time on his pocket watch. Soon
afterwards, Cartier sent him a prototype of a wristwatch. It was sold
from 1911 as the Santos, and was the first watch with the bracelet
attachment horns integrated into the case. These integrated horns made
it the first modern wristwatch for men."
2510c39011c5··on Hiring experiments reveal 2:1 faculty preference for women on STEM tenure track
what are the real benefits and downsides of this sexism (or of the ideal sex-fairness) for our society, besides the "social justice"?

I mean, if this practice is not beneficial to anyone (except the girls, [EDIT:and also perhaps the utterly smart guys in the world as the valuation of this asset for them increases due to this hiring preference]), they probably would just drop it in the end...

2510c39011c5··on Hiring experiments reveal 2:1 faculty preference for women on STEM tenure track
I am just wondering what are the real benefits and downsides (commercial and noncommercial) for the hiring preference of female over male, for microsoft and for the whole society?
2510c39011c5··on Hiring experiments reveal 2:1 faculty preference for women on STEM tenure track
Well, perhaps it depends on the context; if you average that rate over the whole history of STEM tenure-tracked faculties, males might still be more than females...

2510c39011c5··on MacBook Air survives 1000-foot, 125mph fall from plane
I think how it survives depends on the angle from which it crashes to the ground, as well as the touch point. From the picture, it looks that the touch point is the lower left corner of the keyboard side. From that point to the touchpad, is the aluminum shell, which is relatively more flexible than the touchpad glass and absorbed quite some crash impact to that part...Then from that point on, the touchpad had to broke itself to absorbed the impact propagated from the left side of the touchpad to its right side. And we can see from the picture that there was some point at which the crash force was so great that the touchpad from that point on broke into pieces at finer granularity; and that point is also near the line where the aluminum shell displays a more obvious dent.

I just feel the deformation as the result of this crash is quite predictable, given the same initial parameters...Then why bother went up that high and threw out the laptop, at the risk of hitting some farmer? And if the purpose is to infer some universal rules by induction, I guess many many more laptops (all with the same initial form) need to be thrown out at that height...

2510c39011c5··on This project won China 2014 State Science and Technology Prize
they already have a few (not neural-network though), that can classify encrypted data, such as described in the following paper...

http://goo.gl/wmSrkw

And last month they they just integrated the techniques into their state-operated firewall, and then, bingo! it works! as a result many VPN services across the country are down (as reported in a NYT article linked below)

http://goo.gl/HyvXgF

Perhaps a white list approach is being used now which would only allow those service providers that are willing to cooperate with the Chinese government to pass the filter...

2510c39011c5··on This project won China 2014 State Science and Technology Prize
This award was given out by the Chinese government...and many Chinese researchers don't think this project deserves the prize and consider it is a shame.

A statement from China Computer Fed (CCF), released a few days after the award was announced, has asked the government to withdraw from the award reviewing process...The original statement has already been censored from CCF's site; and this is what I found in google's cache, which is in Chinese but you could have it translated with google translate...

http://goo.gl/Jrks9j

I personally feel the innovation in this state award winning project is nothing fancy...but note in its architecture it requires no hard drive installed on end user's computing devices as one of its highlighted features (although most of the computing are still done at those end points). Anything from kernel image to application data are all stored in and provided by remote data center(s) (which could be, of course, state controlled), and they call it cloud storage...So I feel the act of giving award to this particular project by the Chinese government might be a sign that Chinese government is thinking about bringing up censorship, personal behavior and identity tracking to another level -- if so, then FUCK the Chinese government

2510c39011c5··on Repository of censored and sensitive Chinese keywords
Theoretically, you can't stop people from talking a certain thing; but in practice in you can always increase the cost to reduce the efficiency of communication, especially you can gain a lot of advantages if the effect is on a massive scale, statistically...

And when you increase the cost to such a extent that people get more hassle from talking than get more benefits from this same act, people will simply stop doing it...

A simple example, I am right now typing on my tablet, and I do have to admit that I was a bit hesitant before I start writing this message...it's just much more comfortable to type on a real keyboard than the tablet screen...but I hate censorship and mind control so much that overcomes my reluctance to type on a tablet...

Btw, please don't downvote or upvote my post...I am currently at 256 karma units...I think it's cool and want to maintain this karma for a while...thanks...

2510c39011c5··on iPad Air 2
Yes, I agree that even if every other component is put into sleep, the memory would still drains the energy; and no matter how slow that process is, if not recharged, there will be a time the battery finally runs out.

But the thing is, it looks like there is not much difference between a single stick of 1GB RAM and a single stick of 2GB RAM in terms of the power consumption rate. This is indicated in this article http://www.buildcomputers.net/power-consumption-of-pc-compon... ; well, it's for desktop RAM but I would assume tablet RAM will behave similarly, as seen from other tablets that upgraded from 1GB to 2GB.

From the user experience perspective, if there is no noticeable penalty -- the physical size and the power consumption are the same for 1GB and 2GB RAM, then why not just put in the one with larger capacity, for a better user experience? (and possibly much better for those of heavy multitasking tendency).

Is that because 2GB is much more expensive than 1GB, for tablet RAM? I could not find any tablet RAM price information through googling -- it's not for retail to individual consumer but only sold in batch to manufacturers...

2510c39011c5··on A French Inventor Once Proposed a Giant Mirror to Burn a Message on Mars
perhaps the mirror doesn't need to be a monolithic one...If I were to do that, I would install many smaller mirrors around the earth -- then the burning process could go on around the clock 24 hours non-stop, and it would have higher availability (as the probability for all the area in the day time zone to be covered by clouds and storms is expected to be small)...

Some extra advantages for this distributed approach is modularity (you just need to design and create one mold and production of many would be easy), scalability (in case you find the current mirrors are not powerful enough), as well as re-configurability (in case you want to have a long conversation with the presumable Martians, and not just a single message)...

Then on the Martian side, if they could see our mirrors, then this might just look like a LCD monitor from far away...

2510c39011c5··on iPad Air 2
I am not sure if a single stick of 2GB DDR3 RAM would consume much more power than a sinlge stick of 1GB RAM...At least on a PC, the difference seems to be negligible (such as indicated in http://www.buildcomputers.net/power-consumption-of-pc-compon...)...

Assuming ipad Air 2 has roughly the same power consumption as Air 1 (32.5 w), even if 2GB memory consumes twice the power than 1GB (on PC a DDR3 stick, which has much greater capacity, would be 2~3 w), comparing to the power consumption of CPU and screen, still the power consumed by memory is only a small fraction of the whole...

Well, I am not quite familiar with this energy aspect...Perhaps some experts here could provide more insight or pointers?

2510c39011c5··on iPad Air 2
After a quick search, it seems that Air 2 still has 1GB of RAM

http://www.devicespecifications.com/en/comparison/213211f3b

http://www.phonearena.com/news/Apple-iPad-Air-2-vs-Google-Ne...

If more apps on Air 2 are 64-bit than on Air 1, the memory consumption with Air 2 would be more than that with Air 1. In case the RAM size stays the same, Air 2 could see more page-in/page-out, especially when you keep lots of chrome tabs open or other tasks on...

But perhaps different user groups have different usage patterns that fit different hardware configuration, and Apple might know it very well...

2510c39011c5··on The Limits of Friendship
Assuming in a typical courting relationship network, a female is being courted by 8 males at the same time, and assuming all those men would devote much of their resources to their courtship and hence would have few resources to spare for other inter-personal relationships, it looks like the neocrotex of the female would need to take on more burden (e.g. more developed) as to take care of those 8 links, than the neocrotex of each man needs to maintain a single link.

This may explain why most of the time woman is more adept at dealing with those sociality issues.

2510c39011c5··on The Limits of Friendship
The article says, "Thus, from the size of an animal’s neocortex, the frontal lobe in particular, you could theoretically predict the group size for that animal". So I did a bit googling and found another article, here

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1626378/

This one has another interesting point: "These analyses show that while relative neocortex size is positively correlated with female group size, it is negatively, or not at all correlated with male group size. This indicates that the social intelligence hypothesis only applies to female sociality."

Perhaps after a man gets married with a woman, he could shift much of his social function of the neocrotex to his female partener, and free up that part of the brain for some other interesting stuff...
