234dd57d2c8db··on Barely Half of 30-Year-Olds in the U.S. Earn More Than Their Parents Did at 30
Yes, for large corporations and banks of which directly benefited from the FLOOD of free credit (aka money) and ballooning asset prices provided by the FED, the recession ended. For the rest of us, all we got were higher asset prices and more taxes.

More than 50% of people in this country do not have 1000 bucks to cover an emergency, whether medical (LOL like 1k would do anything here) or a broken water heater, etc. More and more people are living on the edge, while large companies announce stock buybacks and mergers funded with cheap credit printed by the FED paid for with our money and our futures.

Yeah, glad the recession is over.

Well my preference is to be helped by helpful women. Go build your own distro if you want to be helped by a faceless robot. I'll take Sarah, Siri, and Cortana, thanks.

If you don't like it, build a better product that competes with these devices. No one likes a whiner, especially one who thinks they are the centre of the universe and their personal preferences should dictate the course of the "tech world", as you put it. Your ideas are absurd and do not match the biological reality of humans, sorry.

234dd57d2c8db··on Foxconn Confirms Plans for U.S. Investment
The details of the plan are not released, how can Trump get "played" by Foxconn. You don't even know the deal. And even if they don't create any jobs, they still are investing and contributing tax dollars to the country. Could you explain why that is a bad thing?

234dd57d2c8db··on FBI to gain expanded hacking powers as Senate effort to block fails
I think you're over-reacting, this change just allows the FBI to pursue investigations on the internet. Having these jurisdictions made sense in the time of horse and buggy when people weren't as mobile, but a crime committed on an IP address, forcing the FBI to get a warrant from a SPECIFIC judge where the IP address matches the jurisdiction seems unnecessary and doesn't provide much actual value.

The term hacking is overloaded anyway. If a criminal is hiding out in a concrete building with a big steel door, is the FBI committing burglary with burglary tools if they use a pick gun to pick the door lock? I don't think so. Just because a method (hacking, lockpicking, etc) is used, doesn't make it automatically some evil conspiracy to hack into everyone's machines all the time and blackmail you based on your usage habits and personal preferences for things like political affiliation, sexuality, religion, etc.

234dd57d2c8db··on Personal data for more than 130K U.S. Navy sailors hacked
Agreed, how long is the investigation? It's only been a month. Isn't saying it hasn't been used at this stage kind of absurd?

Why even mention that part at all, just makes them sound dumber. Should have just said "there's an active investigation, we will release the full scope in a report later"

234dd57d2c8db··on Cash Ban the Best Thing to Happen to Indian Digital Payments
More than 50% of the population of India doesn't have a bank account. A large percentage of Indians use an open field as a bathroom and have trouble getting access to clean water. How does this help them in _any_ way?

Hold on, let me spend time walking 10 miles to a bank and sign up for electronic payments instead of tending my field and barely making enough to survive on. Yeah, while this is great for India's banking industry to get some growth, I hardly see the benefit for the significant rural population that does not have easy access to a bank nor any of the supporting infrastructure that is required to support electronic payments.

234dd57d2c8db··on Cash Ban the Best Thing to Happen to Indian Digital Payments
You mean less useful and smaller denominations, not "newer". They are trying to make cash unappealing to use by requiring more bills to carry out a transaction.

If the government came and said "Because terrorists drive cars between the hours of 1pm-3pm, we are banning all car use between those times." You wouldn't say they replaced the current driving rules with newer ones, you'd be upset you couldn't drive between 1pm-3pm and instead had to use a less efficient means to carry out your business.

The government is unjustly punishing the whole class because some individuals made the decision to break the rules, and as punishment, it is now harder to maintain financial privacy. Yay. Just what I wanted, less privacy in the age of everything is in a database and everyone is on a list.

234dd57d2c8db··on Ask HN: Why aren't websites adopting client certs in lieu of passwords?
I do the same thing but with SSH. I like using SSH as the proxy because it supports other protocols besides HTTP and people generally already have SSH keys, and I don't have to manage another daemon just to provide authentication with yet another set of public/private keys.

Just have your service listing on 127.0.0.1 and have SSH listening on 0.0.0.0 and proxy in!

The "Fake News" story is being pushed by such places as the New York Times, which just recently admitted they do the same thing.

Here's the NYT letter that recently talks about this to their subscribers. In the letter they admit they published dishonest news stories and after the election have rededicated themselves to "honesty".

We know we totally weren't honest during the election, but guys, we are now! You can trust us! Said the media establishment losing control of the narrative.

I'm sorry, but I don't trust any news from ANYONE nowadays. Not breitbart, not the NYT, not ANYWHERE. If you do, I feel bad for you because you have been fed somebody's propaganda.

So is black metal music racist? Give me a break, people have associated black with evil things such as monsters stalking the night, plague, and death for 3000 years and probably before it. You are paranoid and overreacting. You're projecting your own racial insecurities onto the world where there simply is none, especially in this case.
234dd57d2c8db··on Maine Ranked Choice Voting Initiative Approved
Yes the vote was distorted, but that is the fault of the democratic party for not organizing their candidates better. How can you make a law that prevents one political party from being disorganized? Isn't that kinda like trying to "fix stupid"? (I'm not trying to call the democratic party stupid here, it's just an example of something impossible to legislate against.)

I think the more rules and regulations that get put into place that try to "fix" problems, which are really just symptoms of poor performance, not a root cause, the harder it makes it for upstart political parties to get involved!

This is part of the reason we only have two viable parties, there are so many rules and regulations that make it so difficult and very expensive to participate, that the democratic and republican parties can strangle any competition out of the race.

234dd57d2c8db··on Blacknurse – Low bandwidth ICMP firewall attack
Because maybe not everyone projects their own racism onto innocent words such as black, white, and yellow. We should "go there", because thought-crime and "watch what you say" type ideas are much more dangerous to our society than the term blacknurse.
234dd57d2c8db··on A few drawings about Linux
Yes, but why does windows have to deal with old drivers and userland software? Because they are paid to do so! It is a business, if they didn't make money on it, they wouldn't do it.

On Linux, if no one wants to maintain the old driver, it doesn't get maintained and the manufacturer does it or people stop using it and use something else. Poof no more old driver!

Agreed on libre software, wouldn't be possible without that of course. But I think money has had a large impact as well.

234dd57d2c8db··on A few drawings about Linux
I'm talking about the design philosophy. Windows is a GUI-centric experience. Adding a GUI instantly adds an order of magnitude more code to a project. This hides complexity from the user, but increases the amount of code.

Much of the budget for coding this stack has to be spent on maintaining this easy to use GUI instead of things like developing package managers, filesystems like ZFS, powerful software raid, etc. Because GNU/Linux assumes the user will have some coding skill and technical knowledge, it can spend less time building easy to use stuff and focus on overcoming technical challenges. I guess my point should have said GNU/Linux stack overall vs Windows stack.

234dd57d2c8db··on Peter Thiel To Join Trump Transition Team
Your point was:

"Take it from someone who saw what Brexit did to the UK: Your country, by electing someone with an unpleasant set of views on race/religion, has implicitly given free reign to people with even more unpleasant views on those to do whatever they want and not fear repercussions because... after all, they've been told they're in the majority now."

You argued that there would be an increase in "do whatever they want", which I take to mean crimes (assault, robbery, hate crimes, etc) by people who feel empowered by a majority.

You cited anecdotal evidence as an example (take it from me, I experienced brexit...) to back up your claim there would be an increase in crime. I cited a source ("rag" or not, they cited direct quotes from the police and the police's own analysis of the statistics that there wasn't an exponential increase) to prove the idea that there is some kind of magical "exponential" increase in crime to be false.

My point is that electing Trump is not going to cause this increase because the vast majority of ordinary citizens will not turn into criminals exponentially.

234dd57d2c8db··on A few drawings about Linux
I think there's many reasons for this, but the top couple are imo:

- Linux trusts their users to know what they are doing. They do not build layers of abstractions to make things "easy". These abstractions create complexity and just get in the way, especially if you know what you're doing technically.

- There is significant influence on the technical decisions by nontechnical people for business, personal, and political goals. Quarterly profits are the main motivator for Windows development. If it turned out that abandoning Windows would make Microsoft more money, they would do it. With Linux, the incentive is to have a "good" operating system. Money is important in the sense that it keeps Linux dev healthy, but making money is not the primary objective of the project.

- Because money is the main motivator, Windows is beholden to the people with the most cash. Often this is large enterprise organizations which make poor technical decisions. Microsoft in turn, must provide support for these technical decisions, forcing Microsoft itself to make poor technical decisions. I'm sure Windows developers would love if everyone stopped using old crufty tech from 2001, but since there's a lot of money riding on that tech, the show must go on.

234dd57d2c8db··on Brain implants allow paralysed monkeys to walk
It's not "reckless experimentation" for "no gain" at all.

Here's a practical application for this research. Someone with a disease will eventually suffer from paralysis due to the degen. nature of the disease. Applying the technique from the research, we could record their body movements before they become paralyzed and then restore their ability to walk later.

I think that's a pretty real gain. Just because it's in a fledgling stage of research doesn't mean it's worthless. Medical research is a much longer timeline than even complex software. You make incredibly small baby steps precisely because you don't have tools like a debugger, logic analyzer, etc, etc.

234dd57d2c8db··on Brain implants allow paralysed monkeys to walk
You can't compare the two because one was created by humans and one was not. It's ridiculous to compare these two. Here's a more accurate scenario:

You need to debug this software without a keyboard, mouse, monitor. The language is an assembly language written by aliens with no documentation that uses quantum states in protons to manage the machine. Oh by the way, it's encrypted and obfuscated into nothing but MOV instructions. And there's 100 billion MOV instructions.

That's the kind of complexity we are talking about here. So get off your highhorse and let the experts who just made a paralyzed monkey walk do their jobs.

234dd57d2c8db··on Peter Thiel To Join Trump Transition Team
Your post suggests that now that Trump supporters are the majority, it's open season on minorities. Like somehow the regular joes who voted for Trump will turn into some kind of criminals that go around beating up minorities. I find that ridiculous. It's not just the majority, it's the minority as well (see the video). Criminals gonna criminal, regardless if they are the majority or minority.

It's also unfair to say that the act of electing Trump is implicitly condoning this kind of behavior, which is absurd. ~60 million people voted for Trump. A tiny minority will use it as an excuse to commit violence and crime. Just like a tiny minority of Hillary supporters will use the election of Trump to commit violence and crime (See video).

Now, you use Brexit as an example where ordinary people who didn't agree with the direction the country was going and wanted a change, somehow turned to violence. I'd need to see some evidence of this because here's an article (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3805008/The-great-Br...) that provides direct evidence from your police force that hate crimes did not significantly increase. Here's a sample from the article:

"However, its footnote added that 85 people had logged hate crime ‘incidents’ on True Vision, a website that records unverified allegations of such behaviour, during the four days in question, up from 54 during the corresponding period a month earlier.

What exactly did this mean? The police press release made things clear. ‘This should not be read as a national increase in hate crime of 57 per cent but an increase in reporting through one mechanism’ over a single 96-hour period."

And the next section is a series of images that were used as propaganda citing a 57% increase in hate crimes since brexit used by anti-brexit campaigners. A direct contradiction to your police force's analysis of the statistics.

The idea that somehow ordinary people turn into racist criminals is just wrong. So there, I shared with the class. I hope your condescending response made you feel smug and happy inside. Made me feel good to drop police stats to prove my case. Why don't you go ahead and share your stats with the class that suggest an uptick in violence due to "implicit" permission.

234dd57d2c8db··on Warning: 2016 MacBook Pro is not compatible with Linux
Alright, why don't you tell me all the proof you have that Apple was not a participant in the programme?

The NSA talks about them in internal documents, that they have absolutely zero incentive to lie on, that Apple is a part of PRISM. Why would the NSA lie about that on an internal document.

Don't you think there would be documents saying "We tried to get Apple to cooperate, but they didn't. Until they do, these are the steps, techniques, and hacks we will use against their technology." I don't remember seeing any such documents.
