1ibsq··on Ask HN: Our product name is Meta too. What would you do?
You picked a very generic name to beginn with. That's not an accusation but a statement. Intuitively I'd think only a very heavy organization can profit of a generic name and really make it theirs (shift the public eye to connect that word with a product/ brand). So, my action would be to take the opportunity and look for a descriptive AND more unique name for your project. Whatever you do, I wish you good luck for what comes!
1ibsq··on Many white students lied about their race to improve chances of admission
I see a lot of similarities to the discussion we have in most (?) European countries about the share of women in leading positions. We as well have programs that prefer women over men when applying to key positions to counter steer inequality. Not to say that this practice isn't a hot topic here, but something very similar exists in EU as well. So I can in fact understand why they 'recognize such a thing as race' (same as we recognize such a thing as sex).

We don't have to search for long. All it takes is scrolling down and see what it has stirred up (I'm not talking about the generality, but some individuals and what kind of a discussion rose from all this).
1ibsq··on “Dune” (The Movie), Annotated
I didn't read the book and really enjoyed the movie. Afterwards I didn't felt like there was a lot that happened in the movie, but that was not important. What I really enjoyed was the epic yet reduced aesthetics and the feel that this a bigger introduction to a hole new universe that could hold a lot of great stories. I'm thrilled for the following movies, but I don't really want to wait that long. So what I will be doing is start reading the books.

nevertheless I don't think it's clever to completely discard the idea. Giving incentives to underprivileged people is a way to counter steer an unfairness. It has to be a temporary vehicle and not a permanent solution though - that's an important point to accknowledge.
1ibsq··on Apple October Event [video]
I'm not bothered about it and if that's the space they need to put their tech into it, then this is it. Would be a shame if anyone would make something thinner on the cost of tech specs. Not that that ever happened...
1ibsq··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
I had the feeling they owned it. Like, the woman said something about "no need for adapters" and you could have maybe seen a little smirk on her face while saying that - but I don't know...

I don't think Apple has, but people might have had a fear they would do. Now by adding those additional ports it's clear what route they're going and the jack is safe. I guess that's what he meant...

Sure, but did anyone had a serious use for them? Surely there are people, but I have the _feeling_ that the Touch Bar was a failure from the beginning. Also they brought back a magnetic snap cable for charging (the same my Air mid 2012 has that I'm typing on rn) and they added a HDMI and a SD card slot. It's all coming back ^^
1ibsq··on Ask HN: Non-tech professionals on HN?
Thanks for the advise! Python is in fact what I wanted to start with. But for now I have to focus on exams - including hydraulics and hydrology ;)
1ibsq··on Ask HN: Non-tech professionals on HN?
Within civil eng (at least for my uni) students usually don't take more time than they have to. People finish left and right. It's easy for me to overlook the fact that it's just fine if it takes longer. So it's important to just get reminded from outside the bubble that this can in fact be normal. Thank you! :)
1ibsq··on Ask HN: Non-tech professionals on HN?
It is an undergraduate degree (bachelors). I appreciate the reply, but "just get it done" is easier said than done for me - but you couldn't know:) I do what is possible for me. Sooner than later things get sorted out by themselves when I either make it or they kick me out. I don't know what's next then either way.

But you're definitely right, civil eng is quite broad and I have done jobs within it that I was good at and where I had fun. Bachelors thesis will be something about printing concrete.

1ibsq··on Ask HN: Non-tech professionals on HN?
Student in civil engineering. It's been several years now and still no end in sight. My decision on this profession wasn't very well thought out because I wasn't able to back then. Right now I'm in the position of a gambler who invested a lot and can't really jump of the train.

I want to learn coding, but haven't been able to start for quite some time now. But I have interests in tech stuff and that's why it's interesting to read HN nevertheless.

Anyways, every time I start talking about myself I feel like self pity is taking over and I hate that.
