1cvmask··on LAPD Officers Ignore Robbery in Progress to Catch Snorlax in Pokémon Go
I remember when people were tripping over the homeless on the Embarcadero when Pokemon first came out because they were so immersed into it. Never seen anything digital capture people’s attention like that in the real world. Might be considered the first killer app of the metaverse in a sense as it bridged both the virtual and real world in a bizarre way.
1cvmask··on Two startups tried to catch up to makers of advanced computer chips, and failed
They don’t pay high salaries to foreigners at all. In fact they lose local engineers to foreigners, especially the likes of Airbus, who poach them. Their only success stems from US and foreign unofficial embargoes and sanctions which has forced them to produce domestically. Turkey used to produce airplanes even in the 1940s which were then shut down by US allied governments.

1cvmask··on Former CEO and director of Reuters is large investor and board member of Pfizer
I have yet to see any disclaimer from any Reuters articles about potential conflicts of interest in their Covid coverage. I am saying this as someone who has had three shots of Pfizer.

Or that it was secretly funded by the British government:

1cvmask··on The con artist who sold rich investors a fake country
My favorite con from the 19th century is the Spanish Prisoner which is now a staple of the modern Nigerian 419 scams:

1cvmask··on Iconoir – An Open-Source SVG Icons Library
Anyone here use iconair and their thoughts on it?
1cvmask··on Ask HN: Does anyone on here think climate change isn’t a problem?
Do you mean carbon footprint by consumption and per capita? Then it is the US by far and away.
1cvmask··on Muslim women made to feel like 'cattle' as Islamophobic app 'auctions' them off
I wonder how these apps go approved by app stores? Unless they mean web applications by apps. That’s not very clear as many app stores have very explicit terms that ban such behavior and offenses.
1cvmask··on John Deere unveils fully autonomous 8R tractor
If farmers don’t want to be strangled by John Deere why do they not buy from competitors? It seems that there are so many alternatives:

1cvmask··on Show HN: BookStack – An open source wiki platform and alternative to Confluence
We could potentially add passwordless MFA from saas pass to your project. Good luck with it.
1cvmask··on Kosovo bans cryptocurrency mining to save electricity
China and Iran did the same. Is there a kist of countries that have done this?
1cvmask··on Bangladeshi firm launches first generic of Pfizer's patented Covid-19 drug
Bangladesh and many poor Asian and African countries can finally afford this Covid-19 drug rather than the super expensive alternatives.
1cvmask··on Show HN: I Launched a “Fun” Web App for Developers
What is the relation with tenably.app?

1cvmask··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
Kissinger is known for his war crimes and Nobel Peace Prize. Being associated with this fraud is not a stain on his reputation at all. They joined because they thought they were going to make a lot of money.

Kissinger also has the fame of being the first Nobel Peace Prize recipient to bomb another Nobel Peace Prize recipient:

1cvmask··on OpenDrop: An open Apple AirDrop implementation written in Python
Is there a particular reason they chose GPL 3 over an MIT license?
1cvmask··on Evidence for earliest use of lignite in bronze age Eastern Mediterranean
It's interesting that the Wikipedia link to it has no history of the use of lignite:

1cvmask··on Texas Team Applauded for Giving What Big Pharma Refuses: A Patent-Free Vaccine
Is there a github for open source medicine and pharma?

Meanwhile they apparently also had private investors for this initiative:

While Big Pharma corporations took billions of dollars in public funding to help develop vaccines from which they then reaped enormous profits while often charging exorbitant prices, Hotez and Battazzi created Cobervax with $7 million, mostly from private investors. One of these, Austin vodka distiller Tito's, contributed $1 million to the effort.

1cvmask··on Facebook said my article was false – now the fact-checkers admit they were wrong
That media bias cartoon is pure genius.
1cvmask··on Teaching Information Security
Ideally there would be 30 or over students randomly chosen. The class probably has less than 30 students to begin with. And the bias and friction for students to set up an account and review makes these results spurious to begin with.
1cvmask··on Teaching Information Security
This is the rating that the famous blogger Philip Greenspun got as a professor at Florida Atlantic University:

Maybe he should stick to blogging or teaching statistics at Harvard Medical School or flying planes. Readers what do you think?

1cvmask··on Phoenix Pay System
This what happens when no one gets fired for buying IBM/Oracle (or big enterprise company like Microsoft). From the link:

Instead of saving $70 million a year as planned, the report said that the cost to taxpayers to fix Phoenix's problems could reach a total of $2.2 billion by 2023.

In June 2011, IBM won the sole-source contract to set up the system, using PeopleSoft software, the original contract was for $5.7 million, but IBM was eventually paid $185 million.

1cvmask··on What does 2022 have in store for cybersecurity and cloud security specialists?
The importance of the pervasive use of stronger multi-factor authentication and a good patching policy to mitigate against the vast majority of current and emerging risks.
1cvmask··on How I Was Unbanned from Hacker News (2013)
I guess that is natural as the user base has probably gone widespread. I even know some non-technical folks who occasionally read HN.
1cvmask··on How I Was Unbanned from Hacker News (2013)
Is there an automatic sunset policy for bans or is it manual by appeal? It seems that I can only submit articles once every two hours.
1cvmask··on A Zimbabwean archaeologist reimagines the story of an African civilisation
Africa is full of so many great civilization stories, that they highlighted this relatively recent one from 1200 to 1550:

in its prime, from around 1200 to 1550, Great Zimbabwe was home to about 10,000 people. The state covered 1,779 acres, more than twice the area of New York’s Central Park.

1cvmask··on Help HN: Stripe shutting us down with 48 hours notice on a holiday skeleton crew
Is this common at all with other PSPs?

What line of work is your business in by the way?

1cvmask··on Ask HN: How did my LastPass master password get leaked?
Master passwords are static passwords by definition. It could have been an old fashioned keylogger for example. It could also be a phishing email attempt.

Disclaimer: I worked on the 2FA part of the saas pass password manager which never has a master password and always uses passwordless MFA like scanning an encrypted barcode for unlocking the browser extension.

1cvmask··on immudb – world’s fastest immutable database, built on a zero trust model
Words like immutable make me allergic
1cvmask··on For some Greenlanders, eating sugar is healthy
I can’t but help remember the Harvard study paid for by the sugar industry to blame fat:

The documents show that a trade group called the Sugar Research Foundation, known today as the Sugar Association, paid three Harvard scientists the equivalent of about $50,000 in today’s dollars to publish a 1967 review of research on sugar, fat and heart disease. The studies used in the review were handpicked by the sugar group, and the article, which was published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, minimized the link between sugar and heart health and cast aspersions on the role of saturated fat.

1cvmask··on The Swiss wanderer who found the soul of 1950s Japan
It's pictures like this that made me fall in love with National Geographic. The fortunes that were spent documenting different parts of the world when a picture really brought color to life even though they were black and white photos for a very long long time.
