1ark··on Upcoming Python features brought to you by Python Enhancement Proposals
Elixir is pretty good too. Elixir, Phoenix and Ecto have the best docs I have ever seen.

Switch to Nim and programming will be fun again.

Use FOSS such as RustDesk, VNC or any other suitable solution.
1ark··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
Curious about the backup solution.
1ark··on Evaluating front end frameworks and not choosing any
Anecdotally documentation in JS framework world is quite bad or missing. So maybe not much of an argument? Compare React documentation to Flutter for example. Also you do not have to update your framework more than necessary. Often times there's a dependency that needs to be updated that requires everything else to be updated and you spend a lot of extra time with that instead of just fixing whatever bug you were supposed to fix. Tradeoffs to both approaches of course.

1ark··on Web3 is going just great
Correction, fixed. It is already working.
1ark··on Web3 is going just great
Bitcoin is consuming power to secure the integrity of the blockchain, that is the reason. It is not "no reason". If you could suggest another permissionless consensus mechanism, then Bitcoiners are open ears, it has been discussed many times at bitcoin-dev.

Bitcoin survived an attack from its own wealthy proponents, miners tried to increase the blocksize for speed, which resulted in the fork Bitcoin Cash. Possibly the number of validators will always outnumber miners.

And the code base is not stale.

1ark··on Ask HN: How do I create a social movement to change the world?
Get children to school strike for housing every Friday?
1ark··on Nearly two-thirds of Gen Z think they’ll become crypto millionaires
In a way the absence of a meteoric rise of Monero is good, its supposed to be fungible money. The lack of traceability and origin of the coins bring concern though.
1ark··on An engineer's observations on Web3 and its possibilities
Can't crypto exchanges provide the same safety, security and trust as banks today? Everyone can choose to be their own custodian or not.
1ark··on An engineer's observations on Web3 and its possibilities
Usually this spectrum of decentralization is downplayed by all blockchains. When you look at their frontpage it's either not mentioned or hidden how it works, or how many nodes there are, how to become a node etc. Very dishonest and annoying. But the marketing and hype around the L1s overwhelms facts.
1ark··on An engineer's observations on Web3 and its possibilities
EVM seems to be the hottest, because of early entrance with its own langauges. But WebAssembly in Cosmos, and Solana favors Rust as a programming language but afaik you can use any LLVM compatible. After that it is just a matter of connecting a client to a node, usually done in the browser.
1ark··on Ask HN: Why does cryptocurrency subjects on HN lack curious conversations?
Lokinet and Session is pretty interesting, onion routing and Signal fork respectively. And as a user you don't even notice any of the crypto except for your seed phrase.
1ark··on “The NFT Bay” Shares Multi-Terabyte Archive of ‘Pirated’ NFTs
I think that's a good clarification, I agree with your point-of-view. The question is for how long this JPEG-NFT-bubble will go on, as long as Second Life or longer/shorter. The word "bubble" can be a bit loose definition, it might inflate/deflate slow/fast; and depending on that be relevant or irrelevant. Usually people seem to mean fast and blow off top, which might not necessarily be the case.
1ark··on Decentralised finance is booming, but it has yet to find its purpose
Anyone can be a liquidity provider in an automated market maker, AMM. So that is what has changed. It has not completely eliminated needs for arbiters to balance the pools, but a great deal, and HFT is not really possible.
1ark··on “The NFT Bay” Shares Multi-Terabyte Archive of ‘Pirated’ NFTs
I wonder of it's possible to make a stream of those assets without wasting the space personally. Basically a scripted torrent.
1ark··on “The NFT Bay” Shares Multi-Terabyte Archive of ‘Pirated’ NFTs
Except trading of Gravatars, right?
1ark··on “The NFT Bay” Shares Multi-Terabyte Archive of ‘Pirated’ NFTs
Correct, but to get access to the "exclusive guilds" on Discord you need to verify your NFT for respective guild.
1ark··on “The NFT Bay” Shares Multi-Terabyte Archive of ‘Pirated’ NFTs
Are games with virtual assets bubbles? The whole NFT space might be, but it's still value creation analog to games with virtual assets. Last 15 years we've gone from MMOs with lots of game and in some of them you could buy land plots, and of course shiny armor. To less game with casual mobile games and loot boxes, to now no game with social media flexing and NFTs.
1ark··on Decentralised finance is booming, but it has yet to find its purpose
Now _that_ is a coherent value statement!
1ark··on Decentralised finance is booming, but it has yet to find its purpose
Yes, trades on Ethereum and Bitcoin can be expensive, but there are other chains with subsecond finality and fees in cents. On a TradFi brokerage it is not possible to take part of in their market making. As your collateral is used for investing and not liquidity in the market making.

Free? I only know of Robinhood and that's only for US, and you get frontrun anyway. If you are interested in holding equities only for value appreciation then I can understand DeFi not sounding that interesting. But if you are into saving, lending, leverage or market making then it should at least tickle curiosity.

1ark··on Decentralised finance is booming, but it has yet to find its purpose
One purpose is to self govern and share the profits from trading, instead of giving banks and brokers those profits. That's already good enough.
1ark··on “Proof-of-work” proves not to work for spam prevention (2004) [pdf]
From an consensus perspective PPoS (Pure Proof of Stake) and PoH (Proof of History) are next steps. If you want to send around USD you can use UST for example, an algorithmic stablecoin.
1ark··on Making Emacs Popular Again (2020)
There is a some effort in Nim, called moe[1]. Nim has a lot of features similar to a Lisp, and is both compiled and scriptable. Of course, it requires contributions to make it usable as a daily driver, but I guess that is somewhat the point. The vision is sound imo.

1ark··on Making Emacs Popular Again (2020)
This is the main reason I changed and do most of my work in Emacs, keyboard only. Using it in terminal is a bit of a bonus. Onivim2 seems promising in bridging the gap, but we'll see.
1ark··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to exploring the internet?
