1ark··on Google CEO tells employees productivity and focus must improve
Seen it so many times as a customer of startups. “This is an awesome SaaS!”

Then they sell it to BigCo, and less than a year later it is at best loosely integrated or worse sunset. Innovation and this form of capitalism is not a good match if we value innovation as a society.

Probably that is also why we read so many comments saying “We did this 20 years ago with…” here when new tech is released. A long repeating cycle where only scraps of innovation is kept.

1ark··on We could have universal Covid vaccines soon
Immigration does, unfortunately.
1ark··on EA: The Human Story (2004)
Not sure what your profession is, SE? Anyway, just creating the thousands of assets that go into a production takes a long time. Characters should be modeled, textured, rigged and animated; same as in a Pixar animation. It usually turns out to some ratio of artists per engineer. Games run on a single machine and in realtime, so you might need simplified versions of those before mentioned assets. Resources are limited, so there are engineers working on only rendering for example, ie. the end of the pipeline before an asset hits the screen. It is complicated and you have to catch up with whatever Nvidia puts out there for you to work with etc.

But we have not talked about how things should even work in a specific game yet. It could maybe be seen as glue, and you need a lot of it. All the thousands of rules that needs to be programmed and fit together. A physics engine only deals with physics. Even an AI engine is discrete. It needs to fit with the game in mind.

And what is the game in mind, is it fun? That whole process of creativity to figure that out also takes a lot of work and time. The game designer's job. Then the tweaking of values, how much damage should the attack of enemy B take?

It is an enormous art and engineering puzzle that is solved together from usually a pretty blank canvas.

Indeed.
1ark··on Gamedevs not baking in monetization are “fucking idiots”, says Unity CEO
The ability for him to get another CEO position after getting canned from EA is mind blowing.
1ark··on Gamedevs not baking in monetization are “fucking idiots”, says Unity CEO
Riccitiello is a class A sociopath. He managed to almost drive EA to the dumps, before getting sacked. For exactly the same practices he advocates here. It would have been so much better if David Helgason made someone who he built the company with as CEO, instead of a serial executive. EA learned from their mistake. The kind of posturing Riccitiello has to do in this article is exactly what narcissists do. Obviously, after being cut from EA, the kind of smooth talking he must have done to get this job is beyond me. Did they just ignore his track record? The people here defending him shows how good he is a persuading people, unfortunately.
1ark··on Absurd Trolley Problems
It hurts the liberal ego more than anything.
1ark··on Absurd Trolley Problems
I thought the point was that you have to think a little bit more about the real consequences from the loss of public transit etc.
1ark··on Unity employees ‘mad and stressed out’ amidst unexpected layoffs
The "slave mindset" is unreal in this thread. They openly defend their sociopath leader's behavior whatever you throw at them.
1ark··on Unity employees ‘mad and stressed out’ amidst unexpected layoffs
Sociopathic CEOs are also very persuasive with these arguments, making most employees believe it is a necessary sacrifice. And, as is evident, these CEOs put themselves in a trolley dilemmas all the time, instead of being honest and transparent (too proud narcissists) avoiding those all together.
1ark··on SQLite or PostgreSQL? It's Complicated
If using Python, then I think Peewee strikes a perfect balance. In my pov it rather helps writing and reason about queries, which in turn you can get as query+params to use in other places such as pandas. It is neither in the way nor magic bloat.
1ark··on Mastercard and visa are the de facto regulators of porn
Bitcoin, Monero, or Peercoin.
1ark··on Windows 95 in Electron
You can do those things in Telegram, fast and efficient made with Qt.
1ark··on React Native 0.69
Xamarin is a good alternative if you don't want the overhead of JS runtime, without going all the way down to the metal as you mentioned. Shared code base. But you sacrifice a bit of productivity for performance and maintainability.
1ark··on Shortsightedness has become an epidemic
Wearing contact lenses with VR is a huge difference compared to without. So I think there is some potential in what you are saying. There could even be room for eye training apps etc.
1ark··on Show HN: Thoughts on Digital Sticky Notes
From the copy it sounds like a feature set of Hansoft. Unable to verify though.
1ark··on Stop Interviewing with Leet Code
Exactly. The follow up questions would be "Reduces what bias? And increase what other bias?"
1ark··on Stop Interviewing with Leet Code
Great to hear this. We use a similar approach, we sometimes get flattery in the form of "this was the nicest interview I ever had". I believe in human centric approach (the golden- and silver rules), and if they have the fundamentals right, technical skills etc. they can learn the rest on the job! Quickly too. And stay working for many years, low turnover, more cost effective. I thought that is one reason there are the standard 90 day trial period. Instead a lot of time is spent in interviews finding the perfect candidate (which doesn't exist).
1ark··on Stop Interviewing with Leet Code
Pretty awesome pace if you can do a 100 in a minute.

1ark··on Dear Spotify, can we just get a table of songs?
I have been using spotify-qt[1] lately. It's quite close to the original client from more than 10 years ago.

1ark··on Nim: Curated Packages
The compiler developers hangout there (or IRC) and you likely get help within minutes.
1ark··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
Just to get the same audio quality in BT earbuds are going to set you (me) back 10x more compared to wired ones. And then what all the sibling comments said.
1ark··on Everything you ever wanted to know about terminals
I see these comments on many links from here. There are extensions or reader mode in your browser. At least that would take care of the colors. In Vivaldi there are additional 'Page Actions' to turn a page to gray scale etc.
1ark··on Everything you ever wanted to know about terminals
I really appreciate posts like this. Learned so much from reading it. Engaging writing style too!
1ark··on Luna Cryptocurrency Collapse: How UST Broke
The dollars you made in the beginning of your career, 50 years ago, would be quite few relatively. Every year you can buy a little less for it. So you need to work twice for your money, once to acquire it and once more to keep its value by investing or w/e scheme you come up with. Stable, possibly. Good for the common man? Disagree.

1ark··on Ask HN: If you cut caffeine, how long would you last at your job?
Quit coffee a few times. And a heavy drinker since I was a teenager. Currently on a few months break. First I stopped for a few days, had a craving and ordered a coffee. The sweating and heart palpilations from that one made me not want to go back. I don't think it even was delicious.

But there is nothing magical about being on or off coffee. You might feel a bit more calm, and no forced bowel movements if you are off it though.

1ark··on How to write a Git commit message (2014)
Not sure why downvoted, this is the "correct" way. Can also do --autosquash etc. at the same time.
1ark··on Magnum: Lightweight, modular C++11 graphics middleware for games/visualization
Embark Studios started an all Rust operation a few years ago. https://github.com/EmbarkStudios
1ark··on Ask HN: Anyone else is tired of all the corporate bs?
I think you can do it! As a good hedge, bring in a partner that has different traits that you click with so you can cover each other's weaknesses.
1ark··on Upcoming Python features brought to you by Python Enhancement Proposals
Elixir is pretty good too. Elixir, Phoenix and Ecto have the best docs I have ever seen.
