1MoreThing··on MIT Ends Elsevier Negotiations
> But how to guarantee that nobody hacks in and figures out how to change a few bytes in one paper that is 10years old?

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but this sounds like an actual problem well-suited to a blockchain solution.

1MoreThing··on Show HN: C0D3 – A free, interactive site to learn coding
A computer, bandwidth, and spare time are all large expenses to large chunks of the population.
1MoreThing··on AWS services explained in one line each
Exactly. It's about developer lifetime value, not single customers.
1MoreThing··on Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever
Markets are still going to be separated by time zones.
1MoreThing··on Uber is laying off 3,700, as rides plummet due to Covid-19
They have an earnings call tomorrow. Have to show something before the call.
1MoreThing··on Uber discusses plan to lay off about 20% of employees
They're not. Most of them are operations.
1MoreThing··on Uber discusses plan to lay off about 20% of employees
According to their last earnings call, Uber's rides business was making enough profit paying for all of R&D costs. It's been a long time since the "losing money on every ride" narrative was true.
1MoreThing··on E Ink smart screen puts a newspaper on your wall
24 hours isn't optimal, but it gets the job done.
1MoreThing··on Yelp lays off 1000, furloughs 1100
This is usually coordinated. PR talks to a friendly outlet, gives them the exclusive on the story with the caveat that the timing is released a few minutes after employees have been informed. This lets them get correct information out, control the narrative, and gets the friendly news outlet an exclusive story. Generally speaking, it's also done to be respectful to the people who just got laid off.
1MoreThing··on Ask HN: Who has been laid off?
There's lay-offs and then there's "I got fired this week." Does this document tell the difference? Because those numbers look about right for an industry that does have some involuntary turn-over week to week.
1MoreThing··on Don't write documentation in Markdown
This is missing the point.

The goal is "please write your documentation." What solution has the least friction around that for engineers? Right now, it's overwhelmingly Markdown.

It's not perfect, and often doesn't provide the features a technical writer or other content specialist might want, but it handles most use cases and is something developers are willing to write in.

So please, write your documentation in whatever you feel like. As long as it gets written.

1MoreThing··on San Francisco bans public events holding more than 1,000 people
It wasn't going to be happening anyways. Those types of programs need to come from Congress, and there was zero coalition built to make them actually happen.
1MoreThing··on Monoliths Are the Future
Isn't this the whole point of a data lake?
1MoreThing··on Congrats! Web scraping is legal! (US precedent)
Yeah, but this is slightly different. This is about a business owner trying to control who can look through the windows.
1MoreThing··on Rolls-Royce plans mini nuclear reactors by 2029
Death is not the only measurement of danger.
1MoreThing··on 'Break up big tech's monopoly': Smaller rivals join growing chorus
In the past, the companies formed from a broken up monopoly are competitors. The company isn't broken up just along business lines.
1MoreThing··on For tech-weary Midwest farmers, 40-year-old tractors now a hot commodity
This is the point of government and regulation. We're not going to get far relying on willpower and rational thought in individual decision-making. So we use government as tool to help use out.

I can't stop myself from eating an entire of package of Oreos if they're in the kitchen. So I don't buy them. I don't give myself the choice, because I know I'll make a bad one. Instead, I choose to restrict my choice (and the choice of the rest of my household) for our overall well-being.

This feels pretty bad if you're a 10-year-old and just want some freaking cookies. Sorry you weren't able to make your own choice there. Our overall well-being took priority over your individual liberties. I get why that is unacceptable to some folks, but there has to be some balance, and sometimes that means restricting personal liberties in order to maintain the health of the overall system and community.

1MoreThing··on Dive into Deep Learning
This is good problem-solving. Why spend tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of dollars building technology to do a complicated task if you can cut that effort in half or more by having somebody where a funny vest?

Remember, the problem is "I need to know when I don't have two managers on the floor," not "how do I use machine learning to know when I don't have two managers on the floor."

1MoreThing··on Google Brass Set 2023 as Deadline to Beat Amazon, Microsoft in Cloud
This is the same logic my extended family uses when they tell me that their phones eavesdrop on their conversations to target advertisements. Just because it's possible and fits your narrative doesn't make it true.

No brand or PR team that I've ever been near has the capacity to monitor and then manually downvote this kind of thing, even on major sites, let alone a niche news site like HN. Who has the budget for this?

1MoreThing··on Dented Reality: Magic Leap Sees Slow Sales, Steep Losses
The problem is that a video through the lenses isn't going to tell you anything about the experience of actually wearing one of these things.
1MoreThing··on Uber: 3,045 Sexual Assaults Reported in U.S. Rides Last Year
Neither of those things are mandated by laws, afaik.
1MoreThing··on My Experience as a Remote Worker
> Imagine delivering a million dollar feature, working nights and weekends, but somehow it's discounted because of where you live?

Imagine delivering that feature and expecting to get a larger salary because of where you live? COL is either a thing or it isn't. Job markets are localized because of physical presence. Once you take that limitation away, the artificial inflation of Bay area salaries fades a bit.

1MoreThing··on The Air Force of the Knights Hospitaller
It's the same reason that people write slide decks instead of documents. Because it works.

Small chunks of information that piece together into a larger whole along a narrative timeline is the go-to document method of pretty much all of tech.

1MoreThing··on Uber Hit with $650M Employment Tax Bill in New Jersey
What's the difference between setting your own rate and being offered a rate that you can choose to accept or decline? Is it the marketplace function of Uber (determining a price point between riders and drivers) that makes it different? Does being a contractor really require the ability to set a rate that no one is willing to pay?
1MoreThing··on Court: Suspicionless Searches of Travelers’ Phones and Laptops Unconstitutional
Don't confuse the lack of a Senate-approved director with a lack of someone in power at a government agency. There are very much people running the Department of Homeland Security.
1MoreThing··on Makers, Don't Let Yourself Be Forced into the 'Manager Schedule'
As a manager, a big part of our job is to mitigate risk and single points of failure. If enabling someone to work like this increases risk and creates SPOF in our teams, we're screwing up letting them do it.
1MoreThing··on Thriving on the Technical Leadership Path
Most places I've been at don't expect you to ever become a lead. Senior is often a terminal role if you don't want to keep climbing. But there is an expectation that you'll continue to grow to at least a senior level.
1MoreThing··on Dark.fail: Is a darknet site online?
I think what you're really seeing is how much people value a good user experience, not how little they value privacy. Killing it on the UX end has always been a thing that OSS projects and software has struggled with and lack of growth there is, IMO, part of what has gotten us to where we are.
1MoreThing··on Working asynchronously
Or raise your bar for average. If communication ability is important to your org, hire some folks to mentor and coach your engineers. Measure them on their communication and documentation abilities, and reward them when they meet or exceed the expected level.
1MoreThing··on At an Outback Steakhouse Franchise, Surveillance Blooms
I've known more than a few restaurant managers in my day, and I have zero confidence any of them would have been able to keep a secret if they were actively surveilling their customers.
