1986··on Techniques used by developers to bypass App Store review
Uber tried to do this, they geofenced Cupertino for a feature so it wouldn't appear during app review
1986··on Apple Vision Pro U.S. Sales Are All but Dead, Market Analysts Say
But people like to watch sports together, not alone
1986··on Microsoft Is Dead (2007)
> Salesforce, and LinkedIn, which they bought after they were monopolies already (and owners only sold exactly because of the fear of saying no, which the article paints very well)

Microsoft didn't buy Salesforce.

1986··on New York bans 'addictive feeds' for teens
And I'm always amazed by how much some other people think the free market can do no wrong and should be treated in a completely laissez-faire manner.
1986··on Ask HN: Video streaming is expensive yet YouTube "seems" to do it for free. How?
YouTube TV !== YouTube

YTTV is their "cable" product

1986··on Weapons in Space Technology, Politics, and the Rise and Fall of SDI
"mostly isolationists" except for wanting to kick off a war in the Middle East so Jesus can come back
1986··on Operation Snow White
The Federalist Society

DEFLATE was created / implemented / speced / whatever word you want to apply by Phil Katz no earlier than 1989
1986··on What This Country Needs is an 18¢ Piece (2002) [pdf]
Yeah I find this one exhausting too because meanwhile in German "half six" is exactly that, "halfway to six"
1986··on I feel like I made a mistake investing professionally into Flutter
You need to know JS to be a React guy though and that's easily transferable to another JS framework or other frontend work, where is Dart used other than Flutter?
1986··on Boston mayor announces residential conversion program for office buildings

Isn't this basically a railroad?

1986··on Nokia launches DIY repairable budget Android phone

1986··on Legal use of hallucinogenic mushrooms begins in Oregon
Decriminalization and legalization are distinct things. Legalization means just that, the act becomes legal. Decriminalization means that the act isn't legal but the perceived severity is reduced and punishment for it is moved out of the bounds of the criminal justice system (e.g. getting caught with a joint becomes a ticket, like a parking ticket or an open container ticket, instead of sending someone to jail)
1986··on Pausing Manifest V2 phase-out changes
It's more than just good stuff rotting. It's a fundamental lack of care, or maybe inability to ship anything that represents a big iteration. On the Google Analytics side, they are preparing to turn off data collection from the existing version of Analytics in 6 months and have been telling everyone to migrate to the new version for months now - but their "migration guides" are missing crucial technical detail, fall out of sync with the state of the new product a mere month or so after publishing, or contradict each other. It's like the whole effort of documentation has just been outsourced to the world of blogspam. Meanwhile, they started aggressively pushing for users to migrate their data collection when the new product itself didn't support some of the most basic use cases that needed to be migrated. Something is just off with Google's ability to ship these days.
1986··on DoorDash lays off 1250 employees
If you're talking about the Biden administration's student loan forgiveness plan, I think you've been a bit misled about the "lawyers/doctors" part - you have to be making under $125k/yr ($250k/yr if filing as married) to qualify for forgiveness, and the vast majority of eligible loans are undergraduate, not graduate. So it would likely be extremely rare for well-paid doctors or lawyers to have their loans forgiven through this program - unless they were working in lower-paid positions (think rural doctor or public defender - arguably exactly the type of roles we should aim to encourage people into with programs like this!)
1986··on Blind: Meta's office to be closed on Wed – 15% layoff (5% Eng 50% recruiting)
Bloomberg is reporting similar. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-11-08/meta-plat...
1986··on The World Excel Championship is being broadcast on ESPN
I watched one of these a few months ago - VBA was allowed, but the whole thing was very clearly about Excel specifically and all of the competitors came from the finance world. Honestly, I saw way less cool use of formulas than I was expecting - a ton of competitors had an approach of "make a big data table and use Goal Seek". Maybe the All-Star is different?
1986··on Carbon offsetting is just another form of greenwashing

1986··on Amazon to Acquire One Medical
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/04/haven-the-amazon-berkshire-j...
1986··on Amazon to Acquire One Medical
Isn't One Medical's entire business model / pitch to consumers predicated on the fungibility of providers, though? i.e. you can almost always see a OM provider on pretty short notice, it's just not guaranteed to be the same provider you saw last time
1986··on Hertz faces lawsuit from 47 customers claiming false arrests
You're also more likely as a civilian, on a per capita basis, to be killed by a gun than you are as a cop.
1986··on Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” synth sounds
But the Chromatics version is even better.
1986··on Berlin prepares 'huge thermos' to help heat homes in winter
NYC has this too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_steam_system
1986··on A subreddit dedicated to busting shoplifters
I'm not saying shoplifting is moral, but to play devil's advocate here:

Walmart, to take one example, is one of the top employers of medicaid and food stamp recipients (https://www.cnbc.com/2020/11/19/walmart-and-mcdonalds-among-...), essentially forcing the government to make up the gap from the incredibly low wages that they pay their employees and enabling them, in turn, to make more profits. Is that stealing from the government / other taxpayers? If you felt that way, you probably wouldn't see much harm in stealing a couple of bucks worth of stuff back out of Walmart's deep, deep pockets.

Anyway, I think that's just one example of why people may feel differently about stealing from an individual versus stealing from a massive, faceless, profitable corporation.

1986··on Alphabet is spending billions to become a force in health care
The Viet Cong were 5 times more evil than the USA?
1986··on Contra Wirecutter on the IKEA air purifier

1986··on Three Arrows Capital reportedly facing insolvency
So the utility of crypto is to violate sanctions?
1986··on U.S. death rates show how politics are affecting public health
You'll notice the totals are the same (673 + 2439 = 3112, 490 + 2622 = 3112), the changes are likely due to the counties' flipping in elections.
1986··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
We gain massive societal benefit from the existence of cars, what equally large societal benefit is gained from the easy availability of firearms?
1986··on Linen – Make your Discord community Google-searchable
There's a distinction between searching for info within a Slack community (Slack handles this well) and searching _from the outside_ for info that only lives within a Slack community. As more and more communities that used to live on public forums migrate to Discord or Slack, that knowledge is basically impossible to find from the outside (Google) if you're not already a member of the Discord or Slack instance. From what I understand, it's this latter use case that Linen is targeting.
