1880··on The Cheap Android Phone Is Here, But It's Not What You'd Expect.
The Trekstor Smartphone is about 80€ unlocked, but is worse than the Blade.
1880··on Using Gmail, Calendar and Docs without an Internet connection
While being deprecated and non-standard, the Google Gears version of offline Gmail was much better than this.
1880··on AT&T Now Charging You an Extra $2/Month For Not Using Enough Long Distance
Actually, I just did some Googling and apparently there are a couple of ISPs in my country that do naked DSL.

It costs more than twice than a landline and a 20Mbps connection.

1880··on AT&T Now Charging You an Extra $2/Month For Not Using Enough Long Distance
"(...) traditional landline users (all six of you left)"

Is having a landline so old-fashioned in the US? It's not the first time that I see this kind of comment, but it's shocking to me, since for most ISPs in many countries you must have a landline if you want some kind of Internet service, whether it's xDSL or cable.

1880··on Kicksend (YC S11) Launches To Make Sharing Big Files A Breeze
Or a cheap Ethernet cable. Windows Shared Folders are more or less crossplatform nowadays.
1880··on Why you can't search for phpBB on Bing
Ah, yes, that. I didn't remember it, since it was solved in a few hours and it was not a horrible security hole, just a problem with permissions in feeds: www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=2014195
1880··on Why you can't search for phpBB on Bing
> phpBB has a pretty bad security record

Not exactly true. phpBB2 has a bad security record. phpBB3 has been clean since day 1, IIRC.

1880··on Show HN: Weekend Project - Create Simple Android mockup
Very nice!

A suggestion: make mockups exportable to images. It shouldn't be hard with something like this: http://www.nihilogic.dk/labs/canvas2image/

1880··on A few days of programming on iOS and Android illustrates a vast difference.
Maybe I am going off on a tangent here, but... why not just use an AsyncTask with a synchronous HTTP petition inside? I am a novice in the Android SDK, but it just seems easier.
1880··on Block sites from ever appearing again in Google results
Yep, it's US only. You can add the sites to the list but they're not blocked if you're not in the US.
1880··on NASA finds water reservoir equivalent to 140 trillion times the world's oceans
Earth holds about 1.26x10^21 liters (source: http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/earth/geophys...). So 140 trillion times that would be 1.764x10^35, or about 176 decillion liters.

I don't know what to do with these numbers either.

1880··on Android account passwords are stored on disk in plain text
> if you've rooted your phone yourself, any OS security is null and void

Are you sure? If I am not mistaken, even with a rooted phone, a program has to ask the user for root permission via the Superuser.apk app.

1880··on Google Deletes Last 7 Years Of User's Digital Life, Shrugs
But you own your domain. In your case, if Google disabled your Gmail or Apps accounts, it'd be just a minor annoyance, because your e-mail address would still work after a DNS change.

Google owning your data is not the problem here, while you can backup it. The real problem is them owning your identity.

1880··on Hyperarchy: Democracy for the Digital Era
> It's currently impossible to tie a person down to a single online entity

Actually, it's quite possible nowadays in many countries, with the introduction of smart ID cards.

1880··on PHP to deprecate MySQL extension
Well, if you use a PHP framework or library, of course there are easier and less verbose ways to prepare SQL statements.

I don't think RoR vs PHP would be an apples to apples comparison.

1880··on PHP to deprecate MySQL extension
What would be the difference, apart of the named parameters? I mean, does this add any security?
1880··on LulzSec: 50 Days of Lulz statement
Then the dump must be old. I have changed my password months ago and the hash does not match my current password.
1880··on LulzSec: 50 Days of Lulz statement
Hm, are you sure? I have a couple accounts there (and they are appearing in the dump) and they are not simply md5(password). Of course they were long, random passwords and I don't play this game anymore, but I'm curious. Where did you read that?
1880··on Microsoft to buy Skype for $7 billion
I guess the Linux client will stay beta forever... sigh
1880··on PlayStation Network being rebuilt
I have seen tutorials about that method in several forums. People were adding funds to their account for free and downloading tons of paid content. That's plain stealing, and I'm happy that Sony may be fixing that.
1880··on Google responds to negative feedback, makes video migration easier
I just tried this automated solution. The result has much more quality than the download-and-upload method.
1880··on Google Page Speed Online
It's very common. It's a limitation/feature of the Chrome API. If you want to make an extension that can be run on any page, this warning will appear.
1880··on Wordpress to Jekyll - Everything you need to know about Jekyll
I found Stacey as a nice PHP alternative to Jekyll: http://staceyapp.com/
1880··on Tell HN FYI: Play.com registration emails leaked
If you are in the UK you should complain to the ICO: http://www.ico.gov.uk/complaints/data_protection.aspx
1880··on New Flash zero-day exploit that allows system takeover
I am not 100% sure if that extension is totally blocking the Flash files. Last time I checked it, it was only applying a "display: none" with CSS, and some files slipped past it, making it ineffective against 0-day exploits.
1880··on New Flash zero-day exploit that allows system takeover
I prefer enabling Click-to-play in about:flags.
