13throwaway··on Countries don't own their Internet domains, ICANN says
Looks like countries need to look into decentralized DNS. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namecoin
13throwaway··on Free, Worldwide, Encrypted Phone Calls for iPhone
Great job guys! I'm a big fan of what whisper systems is doing. Why is this not called redphone though? Does it have different features?

Edit: Looks like the article says it is part of a plan to merge redphone and textsecure.

13throwaway··on Which is better, Adblock or Adblock Plus?
That looks amazing. Is there anything similar for Firefox?

Edit: relevant issue: https://github.com/gorhill/httpswitchboard/issues/86

13throwaway··on Instagram iOS session hijack
Websites need to start taking more responsibility with HTTPS. Reddit, and a few other popular sites can also have their sessions hijacked.
13throwaway··on HSTS for new TLDs
Are you being sarcastic or do you really think they are nothing to worry about?

If people just accept any cert they see anyone could just mitm them with a self signed cert.

13throwaway··on What Your Cell Phone Can't Tell the Police
Are there any phones that currently do this?
13throwaway··on What Your Cell Phone Can't Tell the Police
I'm really interested in a less-trackable cell phone, but until I read this article, It didn't seem possible. I am really hoping a fully open source phone comes to the market soon. It wouldn't have this ping "feature", it could connect to the second or third closest tower, and it could completely shut off cell when on wifi.
13throwaway··on Adblock Plus gives Facebook users a way to block its extended tracking efforts
If you are trying to avoid being tracked by Google I don't recommend using Chrome.

People's need for a decentralized, pseudononymous currency gives Bitcoin value.

13throwaway··on For Sale: 29,656.51306529 Bitcoins
Do you believe that there are not any people who want an anonymous(Edit: pseudononymous), decentralized currency?

13throwaway··on Apple begins rejecting apps that offer rewards for video views, social sharing
I couldn't agree more. IAP have destroyed sandbox games. I love the old Sim Tower and Moon Tycoon games. I would love a port of them to mobile. Sandbox games nowadays are all about trying to squeeze every last penny out of the customer.
13throwaway··on Ask HN: How bad is it to use a self-signed SSL certificate?
I think this is a good idea. It could be combined with a system similar to HSTS so banks could protect against MITM attacks.
13throwaway··on Ask HN: How bad is it to use a self-signed SSL certificate?
But if a site is self signed the browser could show something like "This site is not authenticated, don't enter any personal info/passwords"
13throwaway··on Ask HN: How bad is it to use a self-signed SSL certificate?
I think I have a good idea to solve this. What if a system similar to HSTS was implemented? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_Strict_Transport_Security important sites (banks) could send a "don't allow self signed certs" header. Browser UI could change to educate users not to type personal information into self signed sites.
13throwaway··on Privacy Badger
They are probably using HSTS to keep users from accepting unsafe certs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_Strict_Transport_Security
13throwaway··on Self-Destructing Cookies
This is a very good extension, I have been using it for a while. It is very much the best of both worlds, using cookies to login, then deleting them when you leave the site. You don't have to worry about whitelists, etc.
13throwaway··on Can This Web Be Saved? Mozilla Accepts DRM, and We All Lose
While it wasn't stated in the article, I believe this system will lead to fully "protected" websites. Things you and me take for granted such as copying text, downloading an image, or modifying a URL to navigate a site easier may become a thing of the past. It's dark waters ahead, and with Hollywood at the helm I'm absolutely terrified at what tommorow's internet will look like.
13throwaway··on Can This Web Be Saved? Mozilla Accepts DRM, and We All Lose
If all major browsers support eme, every website will use it. Say goodbye to youtube-dl. Maybe next year eme will be updated to "protect" html. Soon the entire web may be a closed system. It doesn't matter what the FCC decides on Friday, today is the day the web dies, at mozilla's hands.

There is always a choice mozilla, please make the right one.

Interesting concept, too bad you overide scrolling. I wanted to check out your website but it was too annoying on mobile. Can your target customer not afford browsers that scroll?
13throwaway··on Announcing the MIT Bitcoin Project
This is a really good idea. Everyone knows everyone else has 100 more dollars in their pocket, and the smart kids will come up with business ideas to collet the bitcoins.
