13rac1··on Broken
Yes, it's one of the reasons Wayland was created. Screensavers didn't exist when X was designed. https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTI5MQ

> Right now with screensavers under X it's basically capturing the input and continually redrawing over the display. > With Wayland, Kristian plans for the lock-screen to be part of the Wayland compositor. In having the compositor handle the screensaver role, it can ensure that no window can appear atop the screensaver surface, it can properly detect idling and grabs already, and has complete control over the screen. Unlike the X design, there wouldn't even need to be a screensaver "window" that's on top but the compositor could just keep painting a black screen. For those interested in a "fancy screensaver", a plug-in could be used or an out-of-process Wayland client for drawing whatever you desire.

13rac1··on Why aren’t more companies remote-first?
I've done many multi-hour video calls switching between pairing and unrelated tasks with 1-2 co-workers on my primarily remote team. We talk both shop and not shop. It works well, plus any of us can exit the call to focus. I find it vastly more productive than an open-office.
13rac1··on Playdate – A New Handheld Gaming System
It is ridiculous on a 2560x1440 screen. It seems to be designed for a "10ft television" view distance. Much better at 25% zoom.
13rac1··on Solid Principles: A Software Developer’s Framework to Robust, Maintainable Code
I've found it important to include the context of that quote:

> We should forget about small efficiencies, say about 97% of the time: premature optimization is the root of all evil. Yet we should not pass up our opportunities in that critical 3%.

That 3% can be significant.

13rac1··on NPM staff fired after trying to unionize – complaints
I strongly prefer Go's "option B" over node_modules. Your concerns (immutability, reliability, and general code existence) are handled by vendoring. Vendoring has the added benefit of enabling project builds without additional HTTP dependencies; entirely avoiding the "left-pad" problem class. I wish my NPM projects were so easy.
13rac1··on Its butterfly keyboard design has failed, but Apple has yet to admit its mistake
I haven't experienced whole-day upgrading sessions in a long time. YMMV.

Canonical says LTS are for polish and non-LTS are new features: https://www.ubuntu.com/about/release-cycle

> Interim releases will introduce new capabilities from Canonical and upstream open source projects, they serve as a proving ground for these new capabilities.

13rac1··on Its butterfly keyboard design has failed, but Apple has yet to admit its mistake
This is why both my work and personal machines only run LTS versions.

Exactly. Here is Louis Rossmann dumping a pint of water on his Lenovo https://youtu.be/ig3xI8dUdm0?t=1702
13rac1··on Burger King is introducing a vegetarian patty from the start-up Impossible Foods
There is a significant difference between the v1 and v2. v1 is a reasonable copy of a meat burger. v2 is nearly indistinguishable. Many restaurants are just now finishing up their v1 stock, so you may still see it around.
13rac1··on Linux touchpad like a Macbook: progress and a call for help
Sleep and USB-C display work out-of-the-box on my Lenovo T470s running Ubuntu 18. I've even used a USB-C hub with Ethernet, HDMI, USB3, and power delivery. Just one wire for everything. Sleep has worked for years now. YMMV
13rac1··on Mozilla Announces Deal to Bring Firefox Reality to HTC VIVE Devices
HTC Vive is focusing on Viveport for the same reason Epic, Ubisoft, and Oculus have: They want to take the sales away from Steam. We are watching the same thing happening with Netflix verses every television company (CBS, HBO, etc) making their own streaming service fiefdom. Netflix and Steam beat the other companies for distribution by years and they don't like that. Re-fragmentation.
13rac1··on Please do not attempt to simplify this code
Yes, it's Go code formatting. Spaces are incorrect.
