120bits··on ListenBrainz moves to TimescaleDB
Interesting read and thanks for sharing.

Not too long ago, I was asked to work on some analytics project and it required time-series data. I'm not a rockstar programmer and don't really know much about trends. So, I ended up googling and stumble upon InfluxDB. It felt like that right choice and I started playing with it. As the time passed, I realized that it might be a good software and I'm sure people love InfluxDB, but it wasn't the right choice for me. I didn't really like the docs, maybe its good now. And I had the same feeling about query syntax, it felt weird.

I moved to TimescaleDB and never looked back. I have it production for almost 2 months now. 20 tables and over 100Million writes/week. One of things I really liked was staging, I don't use docker and or anything fancy. I have bash script that and it runs on centos box and all timescale extension and postgres database are packaged together.

I was impressed by the timescale compression feature. I wasn't using it earlier because I had to be careful about what columns I need to segmentby. I would love to see some more features but I'm sure timescaledb team is already on it.

120bits··on Professor solves 240 computer science exam problems in 4 hours [video]
GATE: (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. Its an entrance exam in India for Post-Graduate admissions. Considered to be one of the toughest exams)

This bring back memories. I was preparing for GATE in 2006 after getting my bachelors. Actually started preparing from 2004. I was so bad at Automata Theory and discreet maths. I never got admitted to the prestigious IITs, but that preparation and learning was helpful later in my career when I got admitted to MS program in a US university.

120bits··on How long is 127 hours
Interesting.

How do we classify the 127 hours is a movie or a time value?

Reminds me of the "Shirts without stripes"

https://github.com/elsamuko/Shirt-without-Stripes

Edit: Removing that space between 127 and hours somehow makes it work. "how long is 127hours"

120bits··on Show HN: RegEx for Regular Folk – A visual, example-based introduction
I started teaching Python to my GF(she is working from home and now has plenty of time to do some extra learning). She is not a programmer and I have been giving her small functions to write. Recently, we started with RegEx and she finds it really hard to get into. She wants to see examples and follow along. I think this will be perfect for her and anyone starting out to learn regex.
120bits··on Gallery of database schema diagrams of open-source packages
The timing couldn't be more perfect. I'm currently working on re-designing a multi-tenant database schema with user-roles and stuff. I was looking for some tool like this. Thank you! Looks good.
120bits··on India announces nationwide lockdown to stop spread of coronavirus
My dad is a Doctor in U.P(state in India for people don't know) and he was on its way to see a critical patient, he was stopped more than 3 times by local police. Being Doctor and seeing a patient was not a good enough excuse, he said. After few minutes of questioning they let him go. But I think the Government should have some measures for this kind of situations.
120bits··on Java 14 GA
I have done much Java since I moved to full time Python/Node/Go. Guess I should give a try now. The Helpful NullPointerException is certainly a exciting feature.
120bits··on Ask HN: I write mathematical essays. What do you want to read?
Thanks, I will check it out.
120bits··on Ask HN: I write mathematical essays. What do you want to read?
Those are some really good topics. Do you links to any of your essays?

I have been always fascinated by unsolved problems in mathematics. Have you written something before or maybe you could write an essay on one of those problems.

120bits··on Tesla's self driving algorithm's overlay [video]
This is a dumb question. How does tesla self driving algo decides which car was first at a stop sign. Does it store the time difference? How would it decide if other human driver decides to go before someone else.
120bits··on When an SQL Database Makes a Great Pub/Sub
Thank you! Thank you so much :)
120bits··on When an SQL Database Makes a Great Pub/Sub
Thanks, this will probably work for me. However, if the inserts are higher, I don't want to get notified that frequently. How would I add a periodic alerts to this? Thank you!
120bits··on When an SQL Database Makes a Great Pub/Sub
This could slightly out of context.

I'm working on a module that send notifications to a user when an alert is generated. I have PostGreSQL as the database and NodeJS is the handler and for connection pooling. Are there any good pub/sub tools that I can use. Thanks in advance.

120bits··on Dark Mode by Default – 95% of People Prefer Dark over Light Mode
I have using VI for years now and I prefer black background with green text, and I'm sure most people do. When I transitioned over to a modern IDE Atom/Code/Sublime, the first thing I wanted was to have a decent dark theme. I did try few of them but it was hard on my eyes(maybe because my eyes have adjusted to what I have been looking at for years) I finally settled on Code editor and its been ok so far.
120bits··on My Job Interview at Google (2008)
> The questions were technical but not very challenging or difficult.

I might be really bad, because few of the questions were challenging and difficult. I was expecting a rant how bad the google interview process is, which is usually what I come across. I do agree the questions are fun and are helpful to someone who is preparing for an interview. The interview and programming questions covered lot of topics.

120bits··on An Interview with Jose Valim, Creator of Elixir
As a beginner, who has never touched Elixir, where should I start? My issue is tutorials NEVER have production quality code. How do know what my code structure looks like? How does linking works? If I/m using database, how can I use connection pooling. Stuff like that. I can look up the basics, but I have always struggled to learn how use X language in production. But I guess this is can applied to any programming language.
120bits··on Designing Accessible Color Systems
I have always been a fan of stripe product launch page. The text is clear and to the point, the graphics/animations are engaging, not annoying pop-ups, the color scheme is not hurting my eyes. The best UI/UX experience I have of any website. I remember the web page which had game of life as the background. Really geeky yet fun to watch. Also, stripe's REST API documentation is just too good.
120bits··on macOS Catalina
After the upgrade every time after sleep, a window pop ups saying "Verifying Dropbox" and it takes 30-50 minutes before it completes verifying. I don't get it. Why does it has re-verify the same binary over and over again. I'm really disappointed in this release over all. Also, ejecting a application freezes and ask to force eject.

120bits··on Gödel's Completeness Theorem
Oh my! this reminds me of a class I took in my masters. Had to learn "Halting Problem". Godel's work in just astonishing and way beyond my caliber. I managed to pass the class but memories are still with me.
120bits··on Building a distributed time-series database on PostgreSQL
I just came here to tell how happy I am with Timescaledb.

I have almost 8 tables with over 60Million rows and I'm very happy with the performance. Considering I have a t2.medium instance(2 CPUs with 4GB RAM). Like, everyone else mentioned, having AWS hosted option will be awesome!

Is there a way to optimize storage? I have set chunk size to 1 day interval . About 2 million rows per day writes.

My many thanks to the engineering team.

120bits··on Katy Perry's Dark Horse Lawsuit Makes Waves in Music Industry
I was wondering, does Shazam can differentiate well between these two songs? I'm not entirely sure about the internal working of it, but was curious to know how these pattern recognition apps can help in this.

Also, reminds me of the Silicon Valley where Richard was able to disproof Patent troll by using his music/search app.

120bits··on Slack was down
I see lot of frustration and alternatives provided for slack. However, I'm genuinely curious about the degree of dependence on slack for team based communication? Do people not use email anymore? We have slack at my company as well and yes it was frustrating, but we have email list. Thing just works.

P.S I don't work for slack or have any affiliation.

120bits··on Mathematicians Discover the Perfect Way to Multiply
Thank you for the explanation. I was wondering how I can apply karatsuba's method to multiply for e.g. 103 X 1022.
120bits··on Ask HN: Tools for building high performance REST API in 2019
Java, Python and Nodejs. But I'm not fixated to use these. I can learn new tech if its better.
120bits··on Ask HN: Tools for building high performance REST API in 2019
Sorry, I have edited my question. I'm planning to build something from scratch. Setup my own server, have an API gateway(similar to AWS) and use PostGreSQL. Thanks.
120bits··on Ask HN: Tools for building high performance REST API in 2019
Bare Metal. I was thinking on setting up my own server.
120bits··on Ask HN: Whats tools in my IDE am I not using enough?
I have been using VI for sometime now. I had used eclipse and restore from local history/cache was something I didn't realized till the IDE crashed and my code changes were gone. My coworker showed me that and I had a breath of relief.

VI has been fun for me. shitf+v and tab > for indenting was something I didn't new. I used to do == for line indentation.
