1024core··on High-Altitude Adventure with a DIY Pico Balloon
Exactly. Given that most birds weigh less than 4 pounds and bird strikes can take an engine out completely.

Plus, if @jacquesm says it, it must be true. ;-)

1024core··on US cities pay too much for buses
So you're saying the designed can cost 3X the COTS one. Similar idea to the story, no?
1024core··on US cities pay too much for buses
This reminds me of the "trash can fiasco" that went down in San Fracnsico.

https://sfpublicworks.org/trashcanredesign

TL;DR: San Francisco government decided to go with custom-designed, bespoke, artisanal public trash cans. Each can ended up coming in at around $20K.

When, in fact, if you buy a typical run-of-the-mill public trash can that most other cities do, it would cost them less than $1000.

1024core··on A simple way to measure knots has come unraveled
Speaking of knots, and not to hijack this post: I am interested in learning, say, 10 most useful knots that could be useful in most situations: joining two ropes, attaching a rope to a tree branch, etc. etc. Is there a youtube channel people would recommend I watch to pick them up?

1024core··on Ask HN: What's a good 3D Printer for sub $1000?
> If you want a large printer that's decent for tinkering, Sovol SV08.

I disagree about Sovol the company though. I have a Sovol SV07 in the garage gathering dust. Its printer head got all clogged up and when I complained to them, they just sent me a random part with no information on what to do with it. I guess I could get into the tinkering mode, but who has the time?

I'd just love to have a sub-$1000 printer which prints whenever I have something to print (which is not too often, I concede), and does a fantastic job of it.

1024core··on Tesla is trying to hide 3 Robotaxi accidents
I got a 2026 model Y recently and tried out FSD. It made enough errors in the first few trips that I am surprised it's being touted as a "robotaxi".

For example: travelling West on 15th street in SF, at Guerrero the leftmost lane turns into left turn only and the Tesla happily continued straight through.

That jolted me out of complacence and the next time it was in the wrong lane, I quickly took over and corrected it. It's happened a few times and I don't use FSD that much.

1024core··on Waymo has received our pilot permit allowing for commercial operations at SFO
Imagine if you could buy your own "Waymo-equipped car". No need for driving lessons. No aggravation. No road rage.

How many people would pay for such a luxury car? With the US population aging and public transit non-existent in most places, Waymo probably has a market for cars.

1024core··on Waymo has received our pilot permit allowing for commercial operations at SFO
Uber also has to pay drivers. How much of that $50B goes to the operator?

Meanwhile, for Waymo, a good chunk of it is profit (after the fixed cost of the vehicle, of course).

1024core··on California’s Alo Slebir unofficially broke the big wave surfing world record
Thanks, yeah, I misremembered the name. But are Mavericks' waves bigger than Nazare? From the photos I've seen, Nazare's waves are truly massive!

Isn't there a place in Portugal (Nazareth?) which has even more massive waves than Mavericks?

1024core··on Corporations are trying to hide job openings from US citizens
A lot of these problems could be solved if H1-B's were given out in order of salary (I think there's such a proposal going around recently). And by that I mean: something like a Dutch auction. Give H1-Bs to the top 85K paying jobs (maybe normalized to SoL in the region, I'm sure the BLS has some idea on how to do it).

The lure of H1-Bs is the money savings, and the fact that if you're on an H1-B, you're practically an indentured servant (Yes, things have changed recently and it is easier on paper to switch jobs while on H1-B). It used to be that if you lost your job as an H1-B, you had 30 days to uproot your life and get out of the US otherwise you'd be in violation of immigration laws.

1024core··on Job Listing Site Highlighting H-1B Positions So Americans Can Apply
It may not be hard, but there are no guarantees and a clock is ticking.

Say you lose your job. Boom, the clock starts ticking and now you're in a rush to find an acceptable job that meets the criteria of H1B.

Say your manager mistreats you; denies you promotion, raises, etc. and you want to leave. You can't just quit and start looking. You have to line up something that will come through in 60 days and only then you can be free to quit.

None of these situations apply to citizen or PRs. It tilts the balance definitely to the employer's advantage.

1024core··on Job Listing Site Highlighting H-1B Positions So Americans Can Apply
The "best" part about H1-B (from a company's viewpoint) is that it's very difficult to switch jobs if you're on an H1-B. So you basically become an indentured servant, always afraid Da Bossman will fire you and you'll have 30 days to get out of the country. There's no way they can pull such shit on American workers.

He just wants to make sure something like January 6 does not happen; i.e., there's no possibility of a reverse Uno when he actually _does_ try to steal the election this November. He knows fully well that he's going to lose the House, and possibly the Senate this November. And MF hates to lose, he's got such an ego.
1024core··on AOL to discontinue dial-up internet
I remember a few years (OK, more than a few) ago, ATT decided to discontinue renting out touchtone phones. It seems once upon a time, people paid ATT something like $5/mo to rent this new-fangled "touch tone" technology. And there were like a million people in California regularly paying ATT (or PacBell or whoever inherited ATTs customers) $60/year to rent a phone that you could buy outright for $10 in your local Walgreens or Walmart.
1024core··on I tried coding with AI, I became lazy and stupid
I have been using LLMs for coding for the past few months.

After initial hesitation and fighting the the LLMs, I slowly changed my mode from adversarial to "it's a useful tool". And now I find that I spend less time thinking about the low-level stuff (shared pointers, move semantics, etc. etc.) and more time thinking about the higher-level details. It's been a bit liberating, to be honest.

I like it now. It is a tool, use it like a tool. Don't think of "super intelligence", blah blah. Just use it as a tool.

1024core··on Thingino: Open-Source Firmware for IP Cameras
A typical camera has a certain functionality: remote monitoring, alerting on events, etc.

How would I, a random user, go about getting this functionality with Thingino?

1024core··on Thingino: Open-Source Firmware for IP Cameras
What does the firmware do, practically? Can I use the firmware on my Wyze cameras as a drop-in replacement? Will the cameras still talk to the Wyze app?

I guess my question is: from a practical viewpoint, what do I get with this firmware (other than that it is open and all that, which I totally appreciate).

1024core··on Perplexity is using stealth, undeclared crawlers to evade no-crawl directives
It's your server. You're free to do whatever you want. You can serve different versions of the page depending on the UserAgent (has been done many times before).

You can put up a paywall depending on UserAgent or OS (has been done).

In short, it's a 2-way street: the client on the other end of the TCP pipe makes a request, and your server fulfills the request as it sees fit.

Jeez... what a damning indictment of today's Universities.

She could just use her publication as a dissertation and be done with it!
