0xfeba··on YouTube shadowbans video titled “The CIA is a Terrorist Organization”
> Children are taught to not question what they're told, because it's much easier on parents and teachers when children don't question what they're told. Then when they're adults they lack any kind of critical thinking skills because they've been miseducated and they're easy targets for disinformation.

I'm gonna guess you don't have children. Children like easy-to-follow directions. They don't understand nuance at all. It's not because it's "easier on parents and teachers", it's because it's what works.

You add nuance later in middle and high school.

0xfeba··on Why Is Scientific Illiteracy So Acceptable?
Sanger was objectively a terrible person. That doesn't mean that abortion is a automatically immoral.

So you can equate terminating a pregnancy with that of murdering adults and children but unfortunately in reality it's a grey area. The older the fetus gets, the less grey it gets but there's no solid line to make it easy as much as conservatives would like to believe. Especially in cases of rape, or high-risk pregnancies.

It's a terrible decision to have to make, so I'm all for reducing the number of abortions. But you can't do that by outlawing abortion. And the side that wants to do that, outlaw abortion, also wants to pretend teenagers can "just not have sex" and that there's no need to teach them about safe sex, contraceptives, etc.

0xfeba··on Progress bars still lie
I bet $100 Netflix does the same. From my "experiments" during outages, it seems to show you a timer based progression from 0-25% no matter what, while it waits for stuff to queue/load properly, then it takes off to 26-100% in short order.

So when it Netflix is up, it slowly climbs 1-5% then rockets to 100% and plays.

When it's slow, sometimes it goes to 15%, then rockets up.

When it's down, it reaches 25% after 12.5s or whatever it is, then sits there forever/shows an error message.

> There was a news article recently published, that claimed that Iceland had eradicated Down's Syndrome. The mother runs through a battery of tests to determine if her baby has a genetic abnormality -- and if so, can choose an abortion. Unequivocally, this is genocide! Genocide!

I'm really interested in how you can categorize abortion of unwanted babies as genocide. I mean, I get it, they prevented DS babies from being born, ergo "eliminated a group of people", for generous definitions of people.

Would you say the same about preventing all babies from being born with fetal alcohol syndrome by having the mothers abort? What about having the mothers not drink when pregnant?

0xfeba··on Conservatives flock to Parler, claiming censorship on Facebook and Twitter
They renamed/rebranded (reprounounced?) themselves as "parlor" rather than "parlay" probably since MAGAs all pronounced it like the former.
0xfeba··on I Just Hit $100k/year On GitHub Sponsors
That's not uncommon. US healthcare is expensive. People don't realize socialized healthcare would likely not change their paychecks negatively.
0xfeba··on Brave launches 1.0
They are working on ... interstitial or browser chrome ads IIRC.
0xfeba··on Early Retirement May Speed Up Cognitive Decline: Study
Never use them.

Truthfully I believe it's strength training that actually helps keep them up. Could be wrong.

0xfeba··on The voice from our Nest camera threatened to steal our baby
I hate to break it to you, but nannies and nest cams do not automatically place anyone in the 1%, or 10%, or 50%.
0xfeba··on The Decline of Stack Overflow
Same. Thought I do ask questions, but I end up spending half a day researching and trying other alternatives to post a proper question in the hopes that it won't be closed. Mine rarely are.

But few people seem to put in the effort to ask questions.

0xfeba··on Cameras Could Replace Car Mirrors?
When you have a kid, they try to choke on their own fingers/toys/food, throw their drink/toys, or just generally be annoying.
0xfeba··on Streaming Video Will Soon Look Like the Bad Old Days of TV
I used mediatomb ages ago, and now Kodi (formerly XBMC). Works great.
0xfeba··on Kasper-Spy: Kaspersky Anti-Virus Puts Users at Risk
Not only that -- but they increase the attack surface. Since all non-OEM antivirus are essentially using undocumented APIs and hooks into the kernel they have been exploited due to flaws in them.

My company has Windows Defender (which does a fine job by itself), McAfee, and CyberArk EP (which AFAIK, just does exe vetting on-demand).

I start my laptop up and it uses 50% of it's 32GB of RAM (not cache!) from a cold boot. Granted there are some IIS services and whatnot dev tools running but still.

Plus the kernel just hangs every other day for a couple minutes. Yay!

At my last job they also used McAfee in addition to Defender but I found a way to uninstall it. And the local IT guy gave me a pass when his management console said mine was unprotected.

0xfeba··on The Sinister Brutalism of Shipping Container Architecture
I love edge cases like these. I wonder if there's a collection of them somewhere.
0xfeba··on One City Saved $5M by Routing School Buses with an Algorithm
> Is it true that in some places this paranoia has gotten so far that you’ll get reported to child services if you let your kids walk to school?

Not really. There have been cases of this (well, with young children walking with older siblings to a neighborhood playground), but they are rare and sensationalized.

0xfeba··on Teen Hacker Finds Bugs in School Software That Exposed Millions of Records
> 10-15 years ago you would keep things like this quiet and maybe share it with your closest friends.

He presented his findings at Defcon, pretty standard operating procedure these days. Instead of pretending bugs are rare and hard to find we're becoming more accepting that bugs will be found and allowing people to responsibly disclosing them is the best way so far.

0xfeba··on GitLab – A $1B business where all employees work remotely
How do you detect when someone doesn't get a lot done that doesn't work remotely?
0xfeba··on How Microsoft made it harder to create Windows 10 local accounts
I switched to Windows 10 LTSC and have been super happy. No Candy Crush shitware links, no Cortana, No Edge/IE (had to save a browser installation file to USB from another computer!).

You need an MSDN subscription however.

0xfeba··on How Microsoft made it harder to create Windows 10 local accounts
If you have an MSDN account, Get Windows 10 LTSC.
0xfeba··on Run Your Own Website
Agreed. There are tens of thousands of exim servers still vulnerable. Not to mention Drupal, etc.

If you are not going to actively maintain and update it, let someone else handle it that will.

0xfeba··on Run Your Own Website
You can still call APIs with a static site and do quite a bit in the browser.
0xfeba··on Run Your Own Website
I've been with them for about 10 years now. They've increased pricing and decreased support at the same time. They have introduced (probably 8 years ago) a static site option which is considerably cheaper.

But moving my static sites to S3 would be considerably cheaper.

0xfeba··on Run Your Own Website
You're lucky the Rock Star doesn't go all Nissan.com on you (which appears to be NLA).
0xfeba··on Run Your Own Website
What do you mean deploys to docker? Does it deploy in a container running the web server?
0xfeba··on YouTube's ban on “hacking techniques” threatens to shut down infosec YouTube
YouTube is a private company. They are under no obligation to provide support in 5,000 different languages. Or to host your videos at all. This post reeks of entitlement.
0xfeba··on The rise of remote working will continue
Myself, 6 months remote after 8 years in an office. I like it a lot. But I figure it depends on the person. My friend who thought he was fine as a loner hates it. He has no nearby friends or family.

I love it. I never liked water cooler talk or the people at the office but I saw value in it since being antisocial wasn't good for my career.

Now that I'm remote, there's much less politics/drama. I imagine in other companies it could be a problem that there was politics you don't get to keep abreast of, but I suppose I am lucky. I am measured more by my output than by my smile and/or on-the-spot responses.

I have more time for my family, I get all the household chores done during the work week and free up my nights and weekends. I don't think I'll go back to an office if I can help it.

0xfeba··on The rise of remote working will continue
I strongly disagree. Reducing warming to <=2C will take drastic government regulations. It's never going to happen. This isn't something that can be done by recycling campaigns or "work remote!" slogans.
0xfeba··on Reddit has quarantined /r/The_Donald
There are far more instances of violence, or threats of violence, from the right than the left.
0xfeba··on The internet is increasingly a low-trust society
True. Is it similar to "road rage" where people are safe and secure in their moving "castle", and freely criticize and yell at others without fear of consequences?
0xfeba··on The internet is increasingly a low-trust society
At probably a naive glance it seems related to anonymity. Would tying identity to online posts increase this trust? What if you had to insert your National ID Card to comment in some feedback forums?

I remember YouTube tried this and failed due to pushback.

What's the driver of this clickbait/instant gratification/hot take culture that's developing? Is it just ads?
