0x49d1··on Signal app downloads spike as US protesters seek message encryption
First time hearing about Matrix standard. But in case the clients are maintained by some individuals - why should we trust them that there are no backdoors in their compiled binaries? Seems like a nice project! But probably it will take it's small niche, probably for now it is not wide spreaded, haven't heard any noise about the standard.

Actually they do: https://telegram.org/faq#q-so-how-do-you-encrypt-data , but since group chats are using Telegram's servers the encryption is not client-to-client. Here is the actual specification of how does their srever-client encryption work: https://core.telegram.org/mtproto

Also lacks proper fast and memory efficient desktop client, good cloud backups, settings for almost everything (traffic usage/space/visuals), programmable bots. And I'm not saying about some features that for example I use a lot, like "Channels" (Almost always for news, but with ability to offline access to linked websites). Anyway: you just have to test for yourself how comfortably fast their software is on both desktop/mobile platforms. Tho sure I like Signal very much, it's just not a product for "average human" for now.
0x49d1··on NextDNS Is Out of Beta
They do have custom DNS provider setting, but it's a bit hidden (also it's different among various MIUI versions). So to find it better try old QuickShortcuts: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sika524.an... and see the Settings->Network Dashboard (or something similar).
0x49d1··on Notion for everyone
No page sharing Not standard markup of the notes (not possible to export)

Seems like a competitor to https://snyk.io/ . Let's see when it comes out.
0x49d1··on Firefox for Mobile now supports NoScript, PrivacyBadger, HTTPS Everywhere
Opera has the same functionality for dark mode.
0x49d1··on Ad blocking with Raspberry Pi and Pi-hole
Very nice resolver: I've pi-hole at home, but NextDNS as DNS resolver on mobile and as alternative DNS provider on home router. The setup works well, the only real thing the browser's adblocker is still needed is YouTube ads ;) Sure will pay for NextDNS when they will be out of beta.
0x49d1··on Xiaomi Recording ‘Private’ Web and Phone Use
Anyone thought that they don't?! Cmon, they sell nice smartphones for 80-100$, why would they do that? They have built-in ads, so they probably study our behavior to send more relevant ads and make more proper contracts for advertisements.
0x49d1··on Vivaldi 3.0 is out – let us know what you think
List can be edited, you can add your ad/tracker lists, remove the built-in ones. But you can't choose page elements yourself. Anyway it's really good!
0x49d1··on Vivaldi 3.0 is out – let us know what you think
It's very nice they have adblocker and full released the mobile browser!
0x49d1··on TablePlus – Modern, Native Tool for Database Management
Hmm, I'm in the same situation: how reliable is the company behind it, can I trust their expertise?..
0x49d1··on Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 Moving into General Availability
But how the VM implementation is faster then "native" call translations?
0x49d1··on Microsoft Teams goes down just as Europe logs on to work remotely
I don't mind both, but don't get why should I use Slack/Teams (without Active Directory integration) when for example Telegram added nice group management into the messenger? More feature rich then both of these, suitable for teams. Ah, no group/video calls... But in case they add group calls - the app will become pretty good for even office communication.
0x49d1··on Mozilla’s DNS over HTTPs
Opera added the same option today too https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2020/02/r2020-opera67-tidy-y...

0x49d1··on Ask HN: How do you secure your Windows PC?
- Set UAC to lowest level (Too annoying to leave on high)

I think it's just better to leave it in default position.

- Use Umatrix and Ublock Origin

Firefox already has tracking blocking and I've done tests to check: Firefox is way faster and stable without any extensions. Ublock Origin removes ad page blocks, but actually adds more resources to the program + slows page loads. Just try to turn it off and recheck.

0x49d1··on Russia Bans 1.8M Amazon and Google IPs in Attempt to Block Telegram
Just one remark: Viber/WhatsApp client's code is closed, where is the guarantee that they do not have some "backdoor" to the client's chat right in the application?
0x49d1··on Firefox 57.0 Released
Very nice release, congrats! Are there any plans to improve tab search option in AwsomeBar? For example now you have to really precisely type the name of the tab to switch to it. You can add some kind of fuzzy search logic to find the tab on relatively relevant typing. With >10 tabs open that would be really useful.
0x49d1··on Firefox 57.0 Released
Nice extension, but no search for tab option. For now I use Firefox built-in option to search for tab: open new one and start typing the title of tab, I want to find. The drawback: that search is VERY dumb and you have to exactly type the proper name, no fuzzy logic or smth at all.
0x49d1··on Firefox 57.0 Released
Yes.. Somewhat. For example can't see how extensions are doing from there.
