Yup.
0x0nyandesu··on Why thieves love to steal catalytic converters
I actually think your reasoning is bizarre. Not all life is equal.
0x0nyandesu··on Why thieves love to steal catalytic converters
No, we're talking about pointing a gun at a guy under your car and another one holding a bat standing and looking out. They can then either back up and run away or get shot. It's their decision.
0x0nyandesu··on Why thieves love to steal catalytic converters
It doesn't matter. You aren't allowed to install after market converters on vehicles in california. Currently it takes 1-2 months to get one in the first place and then two weeks for installation. During that time the insurance company is paying for your rental and you are out a deductable. After 30 days you pay 1k per month for a rental at the insurance rate. During all this you are out time and money driving back and forth dealing with the problem. In all after work opportunity lost you are easily out 5-10k while the criminal barely nets a few hundred bucks. If it's a new Honda your car is depreciating in value while you can't even use it.

There's a reason why we give people the right to defend their life and property with violence. It keeps people civil.

Hell we let people get away with mowing down jaywalkers in LA. Why is it any different for a thief?

By the way a new converter for a Honda is 3k right now. We didn't even discuss repairs and missed work from having to deal with it.

Sounds easy with a tech income. Not so much when you're working a minimum wage gig.

Paying $10k to fix my car right now would be literally taking food off the table for my kids and making them have to do with less over the next year during their prime development. Please reconsider what is actually embarrassing and to whom.
0x0nyandesu··on Why thieves love to steal catalytic converters
I'd have no problem putting someone down for it. I'll sleep like a baby knowing they aren't ruining more people's lives.
0x0nyandesu··on Why thieves love to steal catalytic converters
The one where I can defend myself obviously

I think you're getting a little off topic here. Whatever demand exists for USD there's a ton of sources in the world to supply same said USD that isn't the united states because as we all know it's a world reserve currency... This helps the USA because it makes it possible to print a ton of money and the inflation gets absorbed by all world wide holders of USD instead of just Americans. This keeps inflation way down while they print more money. But even so $1 is worth less and less everyday. Bitcoin has no such problem. It's deflationary. As long as there's a floor to it's demand it will continue to go up in value. Nothing in the past 9 years has disproved this concept.

I'm thinking in the long long term of hundreds of years. Seems to me when we start exploring space moving around heavy chunks of metal won't be so useful anymore and we'll need to use a Blockchain to verify value transfer.
0x0nyandesu··on 10 years of whatever this has been
US taxes (as base demand) are only paid by those interacting in the US market. Bitcoin base demand is international.

Anyway they are totally different assets with their own trajectories and influences. We don't know what will happen in the future.

What I do know is Bitcoin is deflationary while USD is inflationary by their nature.

0x0nyandesu··on 10 years of whatever this has been
You're comparing a single country market to the entire world market. They are inherently different.
0x0nyandesu··on 10 years of whatever this has been
You're kinda dismissing it without respecting that it's no different from gold as far as people wanting to hoard it. People also do use Bitcoin when convenient to move money. I personally used it to pay someone in Brazil for some mechanical keyboard services when PayPal failed to transfer the money. Totally legal and organic demand exists.
0x0nyandesu··on 10 years of whatever this has been
It is until it isn't. The base demand for USD comes from the federal reserve. Bitcoin has a similar base for it's legit uses (like international currency transfer) so both have a demand floor. After that it's all dependent on use and further down market demand.

I think when we all are dead future generations will see crypto as a basic value store like gold. No one will call it a pyramid scheme either cause it would have been around since before they were born.

0x0nyandesu··on 10 years of whatever this has been
When bank runs were common it was normal for a bank to go out of business while nothing really happened to devalue the currency so you'd essentially be racing other customers to withdraw first. The Fed's guarantee to cover accounts in the event of a bank failing stopped bank runs entirely.
0x0nyandesu··on 10 years of whatever this has been
This is literally how fiat currency works. Sure a government can pass a law saying so and so is the official currency but as you see in many minor countries they still use USD or Euros. Without buy in from the population fiat currency can also be left ignored.

The value of USD is also a pyramid scheme and entirely depends on demand from everyone to keep it's value. The federal reserve is only one small actor creating demand.

0x0nyandesu··on Microsoft blocks EdgeDeflector to force Windows 11 users into Edge
My org is basically at this point exclusively Google docs. Chromebooks for support staff and Linux laptops for devs. I think only sales is still on windows.
0x0nyandesu··on Microsoft blocks EdgeDeflector to force Windows 11 users into Edge
Windows market share is the lowest it's ever been. Haven't used windows myself since March 2020 and nothing is making me want to change that.
0x0nyandesu··on Facebook employees are now more willing to leave, tech recruiters say
I don't have a problem using it at work if they give me a work account that isn't publicly visible. It's more akin to being forced to give up your private vehicle and use the company car but for everything. So even when you need a van... Nope you're stuck with a moped.
0x0nyandesu··on Vizio makes more money spying on people who buy TVs than TVs themselves
Down vote all you want but when your wife asks you why you don't have a TV in your brand new house you're gonna cave like a deck of cards in a hurricane.
0x0nyandesu··on Facebook employees are now more willing to leave, tech recruiters say
Yes I know. That's part of the problem. I don't want to be in that eco system. Even just to apply for a job at Facebook they expect you to already have a Facebook account. The arrogance of the whole thing is just problematic.
0x0nyandesu··on Vizio makes more money spying on people who buy TVs than TVs themselves
Kinda have no choice these days. Have a brand new house and want a 65 inch 4k OLED panel? Welp you're getting a smart tv. I found the Sony Bravia line to be the "cleanest" firmware. It's Android so you can do quite a lot to hack it to your advantage.
0x0nyandesu··on Facebook employees are now more willing to leave, tech recruiters say
There's no reason for it if I'm doing back end DevOps. I don't want to work on "the product".
0x0nyandesu··on Facebook employees are now more willing to leave, tech recruiters say
The biggest thing turning me off when they email is that to work for Facebook you MUST have a Facebook account. I deleted mine years ago.
0x0nyandesu··on Culturally transmitted skills and values
If the CEO of a company says they need to go to the next meeting that's not a flex.
0x0nyandesu··on Where have all the insects gone?
What exactly is he going to really profit on? Guy is 65. Has said he's not leaving much to his kids. So I guess it's all going to a trust????
0x0nyandesu··on 230 people living communally on 175 acre eco village [video]
I just mean that typically these communities require you to do some form of manual labor to "take care of" the housing or making food. Nevermind that you might be able to do the same thing on your own land in your own time and come away doing less work on average then if you're forceably conscripted to do these tasks for the community. It's not at all about what type of technology you'd use to do the task but rather having to do it at all.
0x0nyandesu··on 230 people living communally on 175 acre eco village [video]
Why are people on HN so obsessed with this concept? I've always found these communities require a lose of freedom to fully integrate and typically anything "other" in these communities is quickly expelled because the community could not function otherwise.
0x0nyandesu··on Google had a plan called “Project NERA” to turn the web into a walled garden
A lot of super technical stuff I'm googling at work all day I feel like is fairly static content that I think old school google excelled at. Modern Google is great for finding a local restaurant but not so much at figuring out the nuance in some searches.
0x0nyandesu··on Google had a plan called “Project NERA” to turn the web into a walled garden
Yea I really wonder why they don't have competition. You'd think a search engine built with java in the mid 90s would be easy to replicate at least to it's 2005 era standard using modern tech.
0x0nyandesu··on Long Beach has temporarily suspended container stacking limitations
This is the kind of dumbass comment I see on HN that makes me roll my eyes. You sound like you're 3 years into your tech career and you can't help but comment on everything as if you're an expert but in reality you show your ignorance.
