013··on Why Atom Can’t Replace Vim
Did the end of that article just imply that we need a new text editor? A Vim cross Emacs cross (Atom|Sublime|NPP|Etc.) editor?
013··on How An Undercover Cop Targeted A Loner With Autism
Ruining kids lives because they wanted to help a peer find drugs seems pretty stupid. I guess when drugs are illegal it's difficult to draw a line of what's moral and what's not.

Most people think it's morally acceptable to arrest drug dealers.

Some people think it's morally acceptable to arrest drug users.

Now, if you think it's OK to take drugs, you may have conflicting feelings on drug dealers, you'd probably want drug dealers to be fair and honest and get their supply ethically (as ethical as possible). So you wouldn't have a problem with regulated drug dealers and other people buying and using drugs.

If you're a drug user and another drug user asks if you know someone that sells weed, you'd probably point them in the right direction. If you trusted this person and they passed $10 to you to pick up $10 of weed from this person you know. You'd probably agree, since you smoke weed, they smoke weed, you've bought from this person before for personal use. So you're acting like a middle man (Like many in this story). Then, upon given the weed, you are now classed as a drug dealer. Even though this person could have gone to the source themselves and cut you out. Although where is the line stop on who is a middle man? If I'm making no profit, would I really be a drug dealer or just a middle man? What about when the undercover let's a kid keep the change, is he then a drug dealer, since he made a profit. Well technically they're all drug dealers [sic], but where do you draw the line?

The kid in this article was arrested because he sold drugs to an undercover cop. Well, technically he took $20, bought a small amount of weed, then gave it to the undercover. Technically it's drug dealing. Most people seemed outraged by this, rightfully so, as it seemed the cop pressured him to get him drugs (kind of seems like entrapment?). Is this kid wasn't autistic would people be so outraged? What about if it was 1oz of weed that he was the middle man to? The problem with things like this is that there is a law that defines the lines that you may, or may not cross. So until laws are reformed that makes it not criminal to sell drugs, we won't get problems like this. But a massive reform like that would have many repercussions. So why not just make it not criminal to sell under $20 worth of weed. But does that make a difference? Since it's still being sold but on a smaller scale.

So, what I'm trying to say is, all the laws surrounding prohibition of drugs are stupid and when you have thousands of people involved in regulating the laws, it doesn't work out. The police officers in this case are only interested in the arrest numbers, so they can get more funding, so who's fault is that? Kids getting expelled for 'drug dealing', who's fault is that? The definition of 'drug dealer'? Who's fault is that? Illegal drugs? Who's fault is that? Should drugs be legal?

013··on What's it's like to be on HN front page for 20 hours
I hope we don't see a blog post next week titled "What's it's like to be on HN's front page for 20 hours for previously being on HN's front page for 20 hours"
013··on MH370: A different point of view
There are motives for school shootings. There are motives for terrorist attacks. There are no known motives (as of yet) for hi-jacking MH370.

Maybe if it was a 5x5 grid instead it would be more interesting. This version you basically have to complete the game twice in a row.
013··on GitHub's language detection is broken
This 'lewellyn' person seems to be complaining about the lack of support for the language Limbo, a language for the Inferno OS. Both seem quite outdated and out of use. He also complains about how Github is focusing on 'cool' kid languages. Which I am guessing refer to modern, popular languages (If this is the definition of cool, then yes, they are.) Which, if I was Github, I would do the same. It's called priorities. I kind of get the vibe that lewellyn is some kind of 'hiptser'. His obscure language is better than the 'cool' kids simply because he's using it. I also would phrase it as "GitHub's language detection is broken", it's merely missing a feature/language.
013··on Can the Internet solve the mystery of MH370?
Could you not create an algorithm to detect abnormal things in the water and flag them. Each flagged image is then manually looked at by a human and them deemed interesting or not. Looking on Tomnod there seems to be loads of water and clouds, wouldn't it be easier if we could remove all these pointless water+cloud sections.
013··on Youtube search is down
How insightful. I hope there's also post when it starts working again.
013··on Pablo Has My Mac
Whenever sites like this appear. It's always an iPhone/iPod/iPad or Mac. As much as I dislike Apple and the Mac OS, they are very user friendly with their software. Software like this must be very easy to set up and I've heard of "time machine" that takes about 2 clicks to set up and will back up important documents and require no further maintenance other than the initial set up.

Is there not software like this for Linux/Windows? Both the security software and back up software?

013··on HTML is a sexually-transmitted disease, say many Americans
It was a multiple choice. People are probably going to answer with the funniest answer. Also see

So, I doubt these Americans were answering truthfully.
013··on Bitcoin being used to trade child abuse material
People bought child porn with USD and GBP. It's only natural they will move onto a more "untracable"[0] currency. Also, just a thought, I was reading a link from HN about hiding messages and images in the blockchain[1]. Could this not be done with first tumbling some coins then hiding CP in the blockchain?

[0] - More so than USD.

Can you not contact the site owner? Or ask Leaseweb to forward your request to the owner? Besides that, I would assume the next course of action would seek legal advice.

013··on Jim Weirich's final GitHub commit
I think it's about finding a balance. What's the point spending every day at work building your 'legacy', all them late nights etc. When you die everyone will remember your legacy but not you. No one will miss you. But what's the point spending every day at home with your family, creating great memories with them and dying with no legacy to show.

The first point shows hundreds, maybe thousands of people will see what you left behind, be it code, art work etc, but you wouldn't have time to socialise, build a family and be truly missed by loved ones. The second point, you don't have much of a legacy but your family, friends will truly miss you and remember you. So, yeah, try to have both, or just one. It's up to you.

013··on Drawing as a programmer
Programmers aren't all the same person. People have different hobbies, lifestyles, interests. Just because someone's interested in programming, or their job is a programmer, doesn't mean they should enjoy non-visual things like music, languages etc. Some may enjoy running, skateboarding, dancing, stamp collecting. I think what I'm trying to say is, programming is just another part of someone's character, not their whole character.
013··on How I Ended Up In Solitary After Calling 911 For Help
And that's the problem. The police officers know they'll probably get away with it. Until there is a fair process things like this will not change. The hard part is figuring out what's a fair process.

013··on Our approach to gender diversity
Simple.

1. Invite straight white male 2. Invite straight white female 3. Invite gay white male 4. Invite gay white female 5. Invite straight black male 6. Invite straight black female 7. Invite gay black male 7. Invite gay black female

etc. etc.

I think the best way to be diverse with genders, ethnicity, sexual orientation, is to ignore genders, ethnicity, sexual orientation, not to invite male, female, male, female. Simply invite the best speaker, taking into account their sex isn't diverse, even if you do take turns.
