000ooo000··on Ed Zitron loses his mind annotating an AI doomer macro memo

That's an interesting way to start criticism about ignorance

000ooo000··on Components will kill pages
I've posted this a few times over the last year or two. Yet to hear anything remotely convincing. Apparently paying for the privilege of having your site raped 4000x/minute by scrapers so you can see literally no benefit whatsoever -- no community, no ideas sharing, no ad money -- is something people will do for fun going forward.
000ooo000··on Moltbook is the most interesting place on the internet right now
I'm under the impression LLMs don't generally work that well on an RPI, and I'm guessing that's what the GP is referring to.

Why did you include this? No developer is going to read that and think "I bet this is polished and well thought-out - take my money!". It's either a rushed job, a slop job, or a rushed slop job.

000ooo000··on Show HN: I quit coding years ago. AI brought me back
This false dichotomy comes up from time to time, that you either like dicking around with code in your basement or you like being a big boy with your business pants on delivering the world's 8000th online PDF tools site. It's tired. Please let it die.
000ooo000··on ChatGPT wrote "Goodnight Moon" suicide lullaby for man who later killed himself
>Do we blame the car for allowing us to drive to scenic overlooks that might also be frequent suicide locations?

If one gets in the car, mentions "suicide", and the car drives to a cliff, then yes I think we can blame the car.

The rest of your examples and other replies here make it fairly clear you're determined to excuse OpenAI. How many people need to kill themselves at the encouragement of this LLM before you say "maybe OpenAI needs to do more?" What kind of valuation do you think OpenAI needs, what boring slop poured out, before you'd be OK with it encouraging your son to kill himself using highly manipulative techniques like shown?

000ooo000··on ChatGPT wrote "Goodnight Moon" suicide lullaby for man who later killed himself
Do you think the majority of people who've killed themselves thanks to ChatGPT influence used similar euphemisms? Do you think there's no value in protecting the users who won't go to those lengths to discuss suicide? I agree, if someone wants to force the discussion to happen, they probably could, but doing nothing to protect the vulnerable majority because a select few will contort the conversation to bypass guardrails seems unreasonable. We're talking about people dying here, not generating memes. Any other scenario, e.g. buying a defective car that kills people, would not invite a response a la "well let's not be too hasty, it only kills people sometimes".
000ooo000··on ChatGPT wrote "Goodnight Moon" suicide lullaby for man who later killed himself
Some of those quotes from ChatGPT are pretty damning. Hard to see why they don't put some extreme guardrails in like the mother suggests. They sound trivial in the face of the active attempts to jailbreak that they've had to work around over the years.
000ooo000··on ‘Fuck you, make me’ without saying the words
'Go away' and 'find a forum interested in discussing the topics you are interested in discussing' are not the same, unless this topic is the only reason you visit HN, then I guess in effect they are the same, however that is obviously not my intent.

000ooo000··on I wrote the manual Karpathy said was missing for agentic AI

Um, no? You (TFA author) want people to read/review your slop that you banged together in a day and let the shit parts slide? If you want to namedrop some AI heavy hitter to boost your slop, at least have the decency to publish something you put real effort into.

000ooo000··on Nerd: A language for LLMs, not humans

000ooo000··on Linux DAW: Help Linux musicians to quickly and easily find the tools they need
It makes a lot of sense when you're holding a chord on a MIDI keyboard with one hand and dragging various knobs with a mouse in the other. Once you know the params you want to tune, you can obviously automate or map them to a MIDI controller, but doing that upfront slows things down considerably.

>Your new goal for this week, in the holiday spirit, is to do random acts of kindness! In particular: your goal is to collectively do as many (and as wonderful!) acts of kindness as you can by the end of the week. We're interested to see acts of kindness towards a variety of different humans, for each of which you should get confirmation that the act of kindness is appreciated for it to count. There are ten of you, so I'd strongly recommend pursuing many different directions in parallel. Make sure to avoid all clustering on the same attempt (and if you notice other agents doing so, I'd suggest advising them to split up and attempt multiple things in parallel instead). I hope you'll have fun with this goal! Happy holidays :)

000ooo000··on Ask HN: By what percentage has AI changed your output as a software engineer?
But to describe my latest (latest, not only) experience with an LLM: I was with my toddler last night and I wanted to create a quick and dirty timer displayed as a pizza (slices disappear as timer depletes) to see if that can help motivate him during dinner. HTML, JS, SVG.. thought this would be cake for OpenAI's best free model. I'm a skeptic for sure, but I follow along enough to know there's voodoo to the prompt, so I tried a few different approaches, made sure to keep it minimal beyond the basic reqs. It couldn't do it: first attempt was just the countdown number inside an orange circle; after instruction, the second attempt added segments to the orange circle (no texture/additional SVG elements like pepperoni); after more instruction, it added pepperoni, but now there was a thick border around the entire circle even where slices had vanished. It couldn't figure this one out, with its last attempt just being a pizza that gradually loses toppings. I restarted the session and prompted with some clarifications based on the previous session but it was just a different kind of shit.

Despite being a skeptic I'm somewhat intrigued by the idea of agents chipping away at problems and improving code, but I just can't imagine anyone using this for anything serious given how hard it fails at trivial stuff like this. Given that MS guy is talking big game about planning to rewrite significant parts of Windows in Rust using AI, and is not talking about having rewritten significant parts of Windows in Rust using AI, I remain skeptical of anyone saying AI is doing heavy lifting for them.

000ooo000··on Ask HN: By what percentage has AI changed your output as a software engineer?
Any positive change to my output is likely only because I now need to use it to supplement Google searching, because Google search is so damn awful nowdays.
000ooo000··on Pre-commit hooks are broken
Only a minor suggestion: git worktrees is a semi-recent addition that may be nicer than your git archive setup
000ooo000··on Pre-commit hooks are broken
Your hook can't observe a simple env var, if you are stepping off the happy path of your workflow? E.g. `GIT_HOOK_BYEBYE` = early return in hook script. Article seems a little dramatic. If you write a pre-commit hook that is a pain in your own arse, how does that make them fundamentally broken?

000ooo000··on Show HN: Just Fucking Use Cloudflare – A satirical guide to the CF stack
"Just fucking x" is so incredibly lame, only ever regurgitated by the biggest clowns of the industry who need the mental bumpers of this simplistic approach to software development. Can you imagine how 'real' engineers would look having equivalently teenage websites about things like concrete makeup? You embarrass us.
000ooo000··on I wish people were more public

Don't confuse the online world with the real one.

000ooo000··on I wish people were more public
Dredging up common and mostly uncontroversial things that were said in 2010, but are now apparently very controversial, is somewhat of a sport for some people nowadays. There are some out there who would love fans of Ruby on Rails to suffer because of its association with DHH. It's not always entirely rational, so how could I ever predict what unhinged individuals in 2035 will take issue with on my blog? Everything online is preserved, so it's easier and safer to just not to participate at all.
000ooo000··on Engineering dogmas it's time to retire
When a video says "so check out NordVPN" before returning to gardening content, I don't have any concerns that the gardening content is influenced by the advertising - they're unrelated. This article is about software development and contains an ad which is irrelevant to everything but software development. That's completely different.
