Ask HN: Suggestions for IPTABLES for VPS?

Can anyone suggest a good solid set of iptable rules for a vps that allows ssh, http, https, access to postgresql on local host, access to redis on localhost, and any other important security rule that is a good to have? I logged into my vps this morning to find that ufw was not running. There is some outstanding bug that I could not resolve. My only solution was to go straight to iptables. when searching for a good default set of rules, there is no clear solution.
