Ask HN: Pool experiences with VOIP systems?
We started with Phonebooth.com, but their promise of serious softphones never really panned out. They seemed to have stagnated pretty early on, after some promising bursts of activity.
We switched to (YC-funded) Sendhub, but are quite frustrated with the flakiness involved, though their support crew is amazingly good. (That worries me, because they seem to be fairly small.) Their (at least iPhone) apps can't seem to stay connected (known issue), and the web apps are dependent on the sound-processing vagaries of the various browsers (all of which fail in some ways), so neither phone nor web app provide anywhere near reliable phone service.
RingCentral looks great, and is among the oldest and most featured of the offerings out there, but they have a frightening set of solid Yelp negative reviews for customer support.
Grasshopper looks quite interesting, but it's just one of dozens of options (though it's clearly among the top 3-4).
What we're after is 100% rock-solid VOIP service (no lost calls) with excellent (should be much better than POTS) voice quality, along with basic group routing from auto-attendants (ring all phones in a group together, letting the recipients know which group is calling--Phonebooth did that, but Sendhub doesn't).
We also need the usual voicemail-to-email, transferring calls, ability to use phones AND web apps as primary devices, etc. (No desire to use our old desk VOIP phones from Phonebooth days.)
Would love to hear your experiences.
