A slight tangent, are there public XMPP servers?

Are there open source projects that use XMPP for their public channels?

I'm a little dismayed by how many Slack accounts I'm acquiring.

DuckDuckGo offers a great public XMPP service - https://duck.co/blog/xmpp-services-at-duckduckgo

Well snap. I just wonder what happens when some TLA comes knocking...

You can use OTR or GPG on top of XMPP.

There are loads of them. https://xmpp.net/directory.php has a (not-so-up-to-date) list.
