We always know that Aaron will be in charge of all of Quicken’s online and desktop products in the original deal. Why the surprise?

While I respect Aaron's decision, I think Jason just wants to point out we have lost the Scott Cook, Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs of our generation because of this deal. 10 years later, will you still remember a general manager inside Intuit? Or will someone write a book about a general manager inside a corporation? We will forget about him very soon. In Jim Collins' words, leading entrepreneurs defined success on a very big scale. Their ambitions are huge. I don't think Aaron has done anything wrong. But as a young entrepreneur, we just lost someone who we can look up to.

Also, Steve Jobs returned to Apple to be CEO but not a general manager of a department.

Jobs didn't return to be CEO. He was an advisor for a while, then was appointed interim CEO (which he apparently was only expected to be for a few months). http://www.apple.com/ca/press/1997/09/InterimCEO.html

Aaron Patzer the "Steve Jobs of our generation" -- Are you serious??????

We didn't LOSE anything. There's a very real possibility that if Aaron ends up turning Intuit around, he could take the helm and start driving some really great, innovative products.

I think Aaron underestimates the Intuit bureaucracy. He'll have to do a lot of slashing n burning to get stuff to happen. I eagerly await more news on the "Mintification" of Intuit.

I am not so sure of that: Intuit seems smarter than I would have assumed by making him vice president. I would not assume that they wouldn't also recognize that bureaucracy is bad.

Why on earth would anyone pre-announce end-of-life for a product before you've released its successor?

You would have to be a complete idiot now to sign up for Quicken online. Intuit has just completely destroyed an entire revenue stream.

The current userbase will just be transfered to mint. This "end-of-life" is not the typical end-of-life where you are ending a product/service. The product is still there, they are just merging with mint.

The successor is Mint.
