Is this a reference to "The Last Starfighter"?

"Greetings, Starfighter! You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the Frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada."

This was how Thomas announced to me that Starfighter would exist and I would be CEO of it. I was confused as heck until I actually saw the movie.
