This reminded me of a short story I read, called Light Of Other Days, written by Bob Shaw.
Instead of black holes or other massive objects, he used a concept called "slow glass" - glass in which light takes years to pass.
Obviously, though, you'd had to have panes of slow glass in front of the scenes from life 6000 years ago...
