Ask HN: How do I submit an Internet Standard?

I've got an idea for a protocol for delivering simple textual information from network administrators to relevant end-users and I did a quick writeup about it:

I'd like to get comments on it, and perhaps even submit it to the RFC process, but the guidelines on the RFC site seem positively byzantine, and I get the impression that it should be a lot more polished before I do that.

Has anyone been through this process before that can help give some practical advice on how to put this sort of thing together?
