New PCIe SSD cracks 1900 MB/s read speeds

Misleading title, they corrected the article (it's 1900MB/s, not 19000) but neglected to change the title. Surprisingly bad reporting.

This is fast and definitely an improvement over the state of the art - at least for consumer products - but these speeds were attainable years ago if you had the $. [1]

If this really can do 19,000 MB/s read speeds, that is faster than DDR3-2133 RAM[1] (which I think is the fastest generally available).

SSDs have already changed the way people write IO intensive applications. Things like this will change it even more.

no kidding, my nas usually gets 30-60 MB/s ... and it's still quite a bit faster than a single SSD.

EDIT: Oh, I see the mistake. It's 1,900 MB/s not 19,000 MB/s. ;P

And given it's still wrong here hours later, I wonder if HN should have a Europe or Asia based mod in rotation :-)

What are the typical use cases for SSDs like these?

In the enterprise space things like this (eg, FusionIO cards) are used for everything IO intensive where the IO payloads don't fit into RAM. Eg, virtual server hosts, large size DB servers.

That depends on how sturdy these cards end up being. But, otherwise I agree.

Newest Macbook Pros have read/write speeds of about 900 MB/s, so they're only a factor of 2 slower than the ones from OP. And that has its use cases. For example, opening a big iPhoto library and browsing through photos, working with 1080p movies in iMovie/Final Cut Pro, having a bigger iTunes library. All of these will benefit of blazing fast storage.

Don't forget that we are currently moving over to 4K and higher resolutions, and that requires a ton of data.

Insane gaming rigs, maybe even servers (CDN's, content servers, etc...) if they can stand up to thrashing and take a beating.
