Ask HN: Who wants to drive their own car in VR?
Curious about any experimentation using an actual physical setting (ie, a car driver seat, an aircraft cockpit, a drumset, etc) as a VR input device. The idea would be to 3d scan the interior (via photo collage or any other technique), then instrument the actual control inputs (steering wheel, shifter, pedals, etc) for use in VR. Obviously, there are a lot of steps and technical hurdles, but just curious if anyone has tried it or is interested. Seems like the best input device would be the real one.
Is VR completely missing the interaction piece?
* For reference to those new in the conversation, some generic input devices are being created right now, but in their attempt to solve generic problems, they still don't allow me to reach out and tune the radio or update a flight plan on my cockpit flight management system. Genuine interaction with 'real things' seems to be missing. I'm not sure what the solution is, just speculating that there is a gap.
