There's lots of development in this space all of the sudden. From Oracle there is also MySQL Fabric.

Fabric also provides sharding + failover, but does so by using modified MySQL connectors rather than a proxy.

There is no best solution for MySQL sharding at all, so many people develop the proxy for their real scenario.

Maybe MySQL Fabric is a silver bullet, but I always think that sometimes proxy is enough.
