It means Microsoft has decided that open source translates into higher adoption and a more successful business model.

Is is bad if they're right? They're still doing good by open-sourcing. Plenty of people want to make money in OSS, too. :)

I don't know if it's good or bad. I suppose it could be bad for competing startups. I don't know, I wasn't saying it was bad though.

I was thinking the same thing

How is that an apology?

in that it's an admission that they're guilty of not being open and collaborative

It's an admission that the world is changing and they have to keep up.

No, they're saying they are going to be "more open", which implies they were already open.

No apology there (nor should there be).

Though it means they were not open "enough". I agree on no apology part, it is just an "open" statement.

wtf, "guilty of not being open". Not being open is a crime now? It's a perfectly valid business strategy.

it's an admission they think they should've been

So adapting to change is now "an admission"?
