I never saw the original submission, so it was nice getting aware of this. But what does this really bring to the table? The linked article is nothing but a link back to HN and some other places.
It's confusing and worrying as it's a pretty mainstream tool. (I wouldn't install anything from this webpage right now btw.)
Also the new binary, which is properly signed, has no write functionality, only read.
Minor quibble: lavabit was not a forced shutdown. The feds did not expect him to shut down, they would have handed him an NSL forbidding him to do so if they had realized his intentions.
Closing the doors to lavabit almost landed Ladar in jail.
not very informative article...
Not informative about TrueCrypt, no. But it's a very telling sign of how people vote here when a zero-original-content article is at the top only because it's by Bruce Schneier (or Linus Torvalds or Joel Spolsky or Steve Wozniak or ... you get the gist).
Agree, but still a valuable link for 1) Getting Schneier's on the record statement of how much he knows and doesn't know about this, and 2) the comments.
Yes, and there are other articles about TrueCrypt still on the front page. I'd flag this and use those.
