What are some creative or affective ways to find work as a freelance developer?

Up to this point I've had some success using Elance and ODesk platforms as a proxy for finding clients.

However, I'm sure there are better more affective and perhaps less competitive ways to find work.

Any and all suggestions are welcomed!

Cheers!
