Ask HN: PHP Frameworks. Kohana or Symfony?

3 points·issa··4 comments

I'm deciding between the two for a high performance news website. Content will be pulled from an API (not stored in the framework).

Does anyone have experience with BOTH and any suggestions one way or the other?

Both seem to have good communities and good documentation. Main concerns are: Speed and Stability. But I'm also interested in any insights about potential gotchas, ease of use, etc.

Thanks!

The best choice is often the framework that you know the best or you think you can learn the quickest.

If you're not using a lot of features of the framework and are going to be pulling in data from an API, it might make sense to check out something a bit more minimalist like http://slimframework.com or something like that to see if something like that might work for your use case.

As someone who's tried both - I say go with Laravel lol - it's built on Symfony2 though, but is very strong, has a HUGE following and great IRC chat group, and support.

Check it out!

This. Laravel is vastly superior to Kohana in every way, and Laravel uses some of the Symfony components under the hood.

If you want something a little more CMS-ey, Drupal 8 is being built with Symfony components as well, and provides a really good set of tools for building and maintaining a website over time.

I second that. Kohana was a great framework, but Laravel is the future. The core features are just all around more elegant than Kohana, plus its community is thriving.
