Ask HN: Entitlement of entrepreneurs tricking you for free consulting.
I've had a few scenarios where I interviewed for a company that is run by one person. A few days later (or weeks) this person either emails me or calls me asking to have a ten minute meeting about the 'gig'. During the meeting they ask me for a bunch of advice that I'm not charging for. The reason I answer the questions is I am assuming this entire meeting is a precursor to being hired or gauging me as a potential hire. I then give them a bunch of useful advice that they overtly tell me is useful and that they make real-world decisions based on. Then they don't hire me, they don't contact me .... and they move on.
I now spot this a mile away and when they do this I overtly tell them that I don't do free consulting and put the clamp down pretty quick.
I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced this technique that these people use? Do you look at it the way I do or is this just 'normal' in your eyes?
