On the subject of Snapchat - does anyone really believe that they don't permanently retain a copy of the images on their server?

It's not flippant. There have been criminal charges brought against people sharing photos of topless underage kids obtained via Snapchat. This is not something Snapchat wants to have lying around. http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/11/ten-boys-arrested-for...

Do the staff of Snapchat understand their legal situation? What do the laws of wherever their servers are say about transient storage (for caching, serving, etc) of images of nude under age people?

I read somewhere that snapchat is thinking about allowing users to replay 1 photo/video per day. They're pretty much telling everyone that they're storing these pics/videos with that feature.

That feature was released on iOS a week (or so?) ago already. I haven't had a chance to play with it myself, though, so I'm not sure how it works.

From what I've read they're actually cached somewhere on the device - if you restart/close the app, you lose the ability to replay stuff.

It's in their best interest to get rid of all photos posted to the service.

I do. Why would they keep the pics? Unless they were legally obliged to?
