That's not what a 'unicorn' means in this context. Yes, there are quite a few "average to good" programmers. But a unicorn is a programmer who knows so many esoteric languages/frameworks/platforms that they are nearly non-existent in the wild and almost impossible to hire.
I think he got that. What he's saying is that this description of a programmer is not that rare.
