The depth sensing in the old Kinect was developed by PrimeSense. The New Kinect was probably developed from technology acquired with the purchases of 3DV and Canesta.
Where did the skeleton tracking come from?
Both PrimeSense and Microsoft developed their own separate skeletal tracking systems. PrimeSense released theirs in binary form with OpenNI.
