I'm giving Airmail a spin. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/airmail/id573171375. It's only been a day, but so far pretty fast and painless for both GMail and a university IMAP account. I've no affiliation with them other than as a (so far) happy customer.

I tried Airmail for a few days, then went back to Mail. The biggest problem was that I could not figure out how to use operators such as "from:" and "to:" when searching. The other problems included strange behavior in the composer, and an overall lack of polish.

Personally I've been trying out AirMail for quite a few versions already, but I always go back to Sparrow. Sparrow seems more mature and faster for daily use.

I'm in exactly the same situation. Nothing else feels quite like Sparrow.

Well, Airmail can only get better. Sparrow hasn't been updated in over a year (and never will be again), and seems to have periodic CPU hog issues for me (with a relatively small mailbox).

I've been a happy airmaler for about a week now. Love it. Delete = Archive. And support for multiple accounts and labels.

So what do you do when you actually want to delete?

(Also using Airmail here, for a few weeks now.)

By default, Cmd-Delete will delete the message, Delete will archive. There is a "Use Delete Key (backspace) for Move to Trash" configuration option as well, in the General config pane.

Trying Airmail as well, the blocker for me at the moment is porting an exported .mbox file from Mail.app to Airmail.

I'm using gMail/IMAP, but for some reason the Sent box goes about a week back and nothing further.

Airmail works fine, except I don't like the layout. Is there anyway to get what Mail.app calls the "classic" layout?

I love Airmail. Only complaint I have is the lack of S/MIME support.

I am trying it as well. I love that it supports gmail shortcuts.
