Ask HN: Odd follow up question from a cold e-mail to Alabama businesses

I'm doing some cold e-mailing of food businesses for my nutrition start-up, and the reply with businesses only in Alabama was:

"Where are you located at?"

After that question was answered, only then did we start a dialogue.

Anybody have any reasons why this would only be asked in Alabama?
