First i heard this i immidiately gone to apple.com/osx looked for iso download.

Yes i am naive like that.

We can download hundreds of fully functional iso for a myriad of unix-like systems... Why is it naive to expect Apple to follow suit?

Is it their software which is so costly, or is it the hardware upon which that software runs?
