Adobe Releases Long-Awaited RTMP Specification

It's awfully nice of Adobe to release the specifications of their protocols after they've been fully reverse engineered and described by 3rd parties making the actual formal specifications rather redundant.

What's more, the formal spec doesn't contain important parts, like the connection handshake process. Without that knowledge you cannot make h264 video work.

I hope they will publish the specs for RTMFP soon as well. There're some interesting things to be built with flash P2P using UDP.

I really want to see Adobe focus a tad bit more on AIR and making it so applications can actually be launched without using the browser. This announcement does bring a lot of possibilities into the mix in the swf/air/js world.

I wonder how this will impact the rtmpdump DMCA issue: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=622294

It won't.

"To benefit customers who want to protect their content, the open RTMP specification does not include Adobe's unique secure RTMP measures, nor does the license that accompanies the specification allow developers to circumvent such measures."
