Ask HN: are there any hardware platforms badly in need of an OS?

Unfortunately I can't specifically answer which platforms are badly in need of an OS, but more diversity is always a good thing. If you could ask a genie to make a working operating system in 5 minutes, it would certainly be worth something to people. Operating systems haven't even been around that long. Would you tell a craftsman in 400 AD not to make his own type of sword, because swords have already been around for centuries?

The question is whether it's worth your time to make, as opposed to other projects.

Televisions, but that's very hot right now.

I suppose if you had domain knowledge about specific industries it would be helpful. Ie. I'm sure there out antiquated hardware systems in transportation networks, etc.
