Scotty had a hilarious video series until his boss found out about it.

I dunno, seems overly dramatic and kind of fake to me.

I'd say no, I followed the link back to his site and started watching a whole bunch of episodes from last year.

If his boss had watched even half of the stuff I just saw scotty get up too (some of it plain funny, especially the answering of viewer mail during staff meetings), I'd say the reaction could be considered not fake...

And the theatric "you're fired, get the hell out" thing at the end? The firing end of that conversation doesn't usually work like that, either --- except in the movies.

If the boss saw the videos where Scotty mocked him then he might be pissed--the binging clients will discover videos of him looking foolish and incompetent.

He'd start out pissed if that was the case. Usually, when you actually fire the guy, you feel better, not worse.

He sounded very pissed at the start, and lost control when Scotty implied that the job was only important for video material.

Yeah, and I did find one small error. At around 2:20 he starts hitting himself in the head while at home, and then it switches over to the hidden camera. At 2:23 you can hear him hit himself once more when the boss starts to speak.

So unless I get convinced he starts hitting himself in the head while arguing with people, I think this is fake.

I have to agree with froo, if this was a fake conversation it would have gone a lot smoother and Scotty would have had a few more one-liners.

Agree. "Bing", "bung", I call shenanigans.

Unfortunately, I find that all too credible. Shenanigans or not, it's easier than ever to start a career in showbiz these days.

Could be, but it's pretty elaborate. I just watched all 45 episodes. His website had the originals, and youtube had the newest ones. Two of the videos on his site had broken links too, which is either the mark of a true personal site or a really clever viral campaign.

The whois on scottyiseri.com shows it was registered in 2004.

Of course, it's possible that MS approached him and they did a fake episode for the 'firing'.

Seriously? This is (was?) a well-known series poking fun at office work. It's totally for real and he really was fired.

I figured so, but I'd never heard of it myself. Still, I'm sure some of Microsoft's reported $90+ million advertising budget could have convinced Scotty to fake a video.

It would be pretty clever of them. Even we Hacker Newsers are apparently prone to rubbernecking enough to get this on the front page (really, guys?). The Bing references are subtle enough that it doesn't feel like product placement, but prominent enough that people talk about it (like many comments in this thread).

After seven years as a freelancer, I've taken my first full-time, 9-to-5 position in a small not-for-profit company.

It's a strange and exciting new world involving dress-codes, business lunches, casual fridays and something called "Synergy."

I guess Scotty should've been more synergistic.

Real or not, saying "I Bung it" is going to replace "Googled" for me.

I thought they only talked like that in the movies.

The reason I asked was because it's difficult to believe someone would be such ass when letting an employee go. Especially in the way that he seemed to psyche himself up and get angrier and louder as he went.

Having just watched the videos... this is what I can gleam of the situation.

Scotty Iseri got an office job after freelancing for 7 years.

Scotty decided to film himself goofing off at work. Scotty made 2 seasons of episodic content about it... there is some pretty funny stuff in there (answering viewer mail covertly during staff meetings would be personal favourites)

Scotty's videos got posted to Laughing Squid, his boss found out - he was fired.

Or it's all staged -- the escalating anger in the boss comes off a bit too much.

I'm not sure I should admit this, but I was fired from a job (while I was in college) in rather similar fashion. I don't think it's even that unusual.

Think about it. The boss KNOWS this guy is making fun of him in a very public way. He's calmed down (he thinks), he's going to have a really rational conversation with this guy. He's going to work with him... and then the guy starts smirking a bit, starts sort of mocking him a bit. The real anger comes out.. he gets pissed... and great drama ensues.

It happens.

Perhaps... Perhaps not.

Scotty takes the piss out of his boss during some of the meetings by lip syncing some of the guys overuse of buzzwords.

It seemed like an appropriate amount. The boss was genuinely pissed when Iseri wasn't using the job as a negotiating point.

What a loser.

Uhhh. I am pretty sure that recording someone without their consent is an actionable offense. Viral or lawsuit.
