I, myself, would have started, and stopped, with the last sentence:

For certain things, it is unfortunately one of the few options. Slashdot is a wasteland nowadays. Hackernews is good, but the emphasis has been shifting to startup finance rather than hacking. Programming subreddits are some of the best sources for info, at least in combination with others.

Reposting a deaded comment by drivebyacct2, since it seems any comment that goes against the "we're so much better than reddit" grain gets deaded by the mods:

>What possible good or truth can come of making a statement like that? Hopefully you aren't proudly so ignorant as to actually think that's remotely authentic. But then again, most "Reddit is literally Hitler" trolls don't know what they're talking about or sub to any subreddits, so whatever.

Some of the subreddits are actually very decent places. My town's subreddit is very nice, for instance.
