Academia (meaning anything post-masters) has a very nuanced understanding of the word "novel". Skimming through the paper (linked below) it seems that the novel part is that they "show that the amount of information about the future has a significant impact on system performance, in the heavy-traffic regime." Not Elon Musk-novel perhaps, but definitely academia-novel.
