How much developer time is wasted on Patents?

Even with an attorney it seems like I spent 40 hours getting my first preliminary application filed.

Think it's possible to spend less dev time by defining the critical points, hiring law student to to flesh it out, and then the expensive attorney for final review?

I really resent the whole process, I know we have to protect ourselves but I'd like to play the game as little as possible.
