Will the registration of new TLDs be like a modern Gold Rush?
With the first TLDs there was no rush b/c not many foresaw that brokering 'hot domains' like buycars.com, registered (and renewed) for $10/year, could later turn into huge earnings. Now is different. I'd argue that a concise self-described domain is half the sales pitch - and a big weight in SEO. So, say I want to register buy.cars, do I pre-order with a registrar and trust they'll get it for me? Do I camp-out the night before, be ready to hit submit when 'cars' is out and hope my post hits the database first?
I understand the rush of the 49ers, after all gold is a natural and scarce resource; so are words and the possible combinations of them. However, having a corporation (funny, uh?) decide what words can be used and who can process registrations is yet another modern case of artificial scarcity.
I imagine that artificial scarcity was invented by a greedy bastard who needed to figure out how to pack and sell air!
So, enough with the 'best interest' or 'keep things organized' bull shit:
I.want.my.own.fucking.domain.now!
Do.you?
