Biggest gainer of tabs is what I call 'stackoverflow' explosions. I have a problem, then I find 10 interesting entries to be read later, but want to return to the IDE. But I also have 30 tabs on the left that I always want to get down to reading one day. Basically I never return to my bookmarks so I use tabs instead.
